just got the same type of scam on craigslist for selling my car, someone from Texas emailed me and said they want my car right away, $6600.  can only pay with paypal and they will have their shipping agent arrange for a pick-up.  they requested my paypal invoice and email address.
wow, I got hooked on the over pay cashiers check 7 years ago....now they are using Paypal.  this sucks.

The number used to send the text that I received is (253) 880-1519. Boy, it's interesting that so many widely varying area codes are being used.

I have a ring set for sale and keep getting the scam texts. I decided to just start a conversation with this person. I made sure it got REALLY interesting. Told them that the rings were over 1,000 years old from my wife who turned out to be an imperial goddess trying to take over the universe. So I killed her and now have to sell this ring.

Best part is....they were still "interested" in the ring set.

This is the paypal scam in a nutshell: the scammer is trying to get you to send them money via western union. That's it!

The seller thinks they are getting top dollar for their item for just a little bit of trouble. All they have to do is western union money to a "shipping agent" and bam, paypal releases the full amount of the cost of the item, reimbursement for the shipping costs and maybe a little extra for their troubles to their paypal account. Hey, they even got a "legitimate" email from paypal telling them this, right? about how safe and 100% secure it is?

Can't you just hear the scammer/"shipping agent" laughing all the way to the bank with the 450-850$ you just sent them free and clear with no way to trace?

I had one of these once. Their “trick” was to send a fake paypal confirmation email that the money had been transferred (including an additional $1000 for the transportation cost), and then try to trick me into paying (via Western Union) the “transport firm” who was going to pick up the goods. I strung them along for a while but eventually they must have realised it wasn’t going anywhere. There was also some excuse about why paypal hadn’t yet “released” the funds into my account.
