This is one of Portfolio Recovery Services phone numbers.  They have a block of numbers from every area code so it's hard to collect them all.  I have about 100 so far.  Each time they call I add it to my blocked list which sends that number to a "this number has been disconnected" message and kicks me off of the list for that number.  They have called 8 times in one day from 4 different numbers.  These are the worst people on the planet.  What ever you do, don't answer any of their questions and NEVER acknowledge the debt or the clock starts over on the method they can use to collect it.

Blocking this number will not help. Portfolio Recovery calls from several different numbers & several states - in addition to this one which says "Pittsburgh," I get some calls that actually say "Portfolio Recovery" in the caller ID, but a different # than this. I have also gotten calls from them which show up in caller ID as "Las Vegas," Washington, as well as somewhere down south, Fla I think. They never stop calling. You'd think they'd give up!!

BTW, very good advice about not answering any of their questions and never acknowledging the debt!

These people continuously call my home looking for someone I've never heard of!    I've told them repeatedly that I don't know the person they are looking for... but that doesn't stop them from calling everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day.

Today these buffoons called for the 172nd time since they "decided to cease collection efforts" in September of 2010. That was the explanation given by some lawyer they had to hire to deal with all the complaints from state attorney general offices all over the country. He was  forced by the a.g.'s office to reply to my inquiry regarding the phony 1099C they had issued for a huge amount of money, more than twice the amount of the totally unverified "debt" they claimed I owed them. Of course, I filed a detailed complaint with the IRS, and with the US Postal Service for sending a fraudulent 1099-C through the mail. This was in addition to the complaint to the FTC and to the state Attorney General. Later, these bottom-feeding offspring of vermin sent me another 1099C, for the same year, in the same amount. Some days I think they are so pathetically dumber than dirt that we should feel sorry for them, but mostly I think they are disgusting vile predatory slime.

If you answer their questions, it reaffirms the debt, and negates the statute of limitations that your state has in place. Do not answer any questions. If you happen to answer, just keep telling them you are going to report them to your AG office. Hang up on them if you have to.

I put this number and all the others they call from under one contact listing on my cell, then assign it a "no ring" ringtone and now I don't even know they've called.

For those of you here in TEXAS:

What is the statute of limitations on debts in the State of Texas?

The statute of limitations on debt for residents of the State of Texas is four (4) years. In Texas, this refers to oral agreements, written contracts (car loans, installment loans), promissory notes and open accounts (such as credit card credit lines). When does the clock start on the four year statute of limitations?

Texas state laws are more consumer friendly than most states where the statute of limitations starts after the account has been charged off.

In Texas, the Statute of Limitations clock starts on the day the last payment on the account was made. This is often referred to as the ‘date of last activity’ or DLA.

Example: If the last payment on a credit card was made on January 1, 2005, then the statute of limitations for legal action on the account would expire on January 1, 2009. On January 2, 2009, the debt no longer carries a legal obligation to pay.

Why is the date of last activity important?

Many unscrupulous collection agencies inaccurately report the date of last activity on consumer credit reports or debt validations. In some cases, debt collection agencies have gone so far as to file suit against an alleged debtor after the statute of limitations has expired.

As a result, uninformed consumers may take a default judgement in a legal proceedings and are then required by law to pay the debt owed.

Here is my list of 45 numbers that have called me for Portfolio Recovery.

I use Google Voice, with an Obi110 from Obihai, exclusively for phone service and can block any number that calls. Blocked numbers do not ring my phones and they receive a "number not in service" message when they call.

I guess it depends on your cell phone and cell service. I have sprint so I can go into my account and completely block numbers. Plus, there's apps that block calls but they don't work as well as I'd want them to. My phone also has its own call blocker on it. But it only sends the blocked call to voice mail.

For your cell phone there is an app called "Call Control" works beautifully !  Never rings will send it to voice mail (if they leave one) which we know most of the time they wont. Hope this helps!

They have been calling a number in my house that belongs to my housemate.

The phone is in his name, not mine.

They did not leave a message today when they called at 858AM.

They claimed long ago they bought an alleged debt but never proved it despite several demands.

these jerks call from hundreds of different numbers, every single day. I have never had a bill collector call me in my 40 yrs of living. they have the wrong name & wrong tel.#. When I see they are calling, I answer, wait 3 seconds & HANG UP. I NEVER SAY A WORD. If they want ME to talk to them they can mail me $ 50.00 cash as my time is VALUABLE!  Till then all they're gonna get is a dial tone in their ear!!!!!

They are under investigation? That is good to know. My Samsung phone has an app built in to reject phone numbers, so whenever I get a call from them, it kicks them immediately to voice mail, and they do not leave a message.

When I have talked to them, I have told them to show proof of the debt. I have given them my address several times, they have one I have not lived at in four years. If they can't figure that out - its their fault. They refuse to mail me the proof, they have referred me to their website. No, it does not work that way. So eff them. If they are under federal investigation, that is excellent news to my ears.
