We had this exact same number on our bill on Dec. 5/12 for that same amount. Sasktel says they will tell Triton it is not our call and usually they cancel. But we will have to pay if they say it is. Do the companies not know this is a scam.

What I fail to understand is that the problem has not been addressed by now. It appears that this is still ongoing. I would urge everyone to contact their media rather than CRTC. Have a segment of this scam aired on the 6 o'clock news (nation wide). This will get things moving faster.

don`t switch to bell.  I went to corporate HQ and they refuse to do anything.  Yes is is an attempt fraud which by definition in the criminal code is still a fraud.  Bell and any other 3rd party are complicaent in the offence and subject to criminal charges as well if they insist you pay.  this is why some bell reps you get tell you you dont have to pay them and to contact triton.  don`t pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Report this to RCMP Anti Fraud Call Centre1-888-495-8501.

    900/976 pay-per-call services The service
A 900 service enables customers to connect to phone numbers that start with 1-900 for pay-per-call services. Pay-per-call services include live and pre-recorded services such as adult chat lines, vote casting, psychic consultations, horoscopes, soap opera updates, games, donations processing, sports scores, weather forecasts, translation, and medical, legal or government services.

These services are offered by third parties called 900 content providers. 900 content providers pay the telephone companies to use their networks.

976 service is also a pay-per-call service, which is provided only by Bell Canada in Ontario and Quebec.

Rules for 900 and 976 services are not exactly the same. For example, provincial laws about what collection agencies aren't allowed to do are part of the 976 service rules but not the 900 service rules. Contact your telephone company for more information on the specific rules for the 900/976 services you use.

    Consumer safeguards
    Charges must be identified
All advertisements for 900/976 services must indicate the charges for making a call.

When you make a 900/976 call by phone or a 900 call via the Internet, you must receive clear and complete information on charges and when they will begin.

If you access a 900 service via the Internet, you must also be presented with an "I Agree" dialogue box or other way to clearly indicate your explicit consent to proceed with the call.

    Billing information and practices
Some 900 services bill customers directly. Others bill customers through a telephone company or another third party. No matter who bills you, when you receive a bill for calls to a 900 service, it must fully describe all charges plus the time, date and length of each call.

All bills for 900 service must follow the same rules concerning safeguards and disclosure of information.

    First-time waiver
900 content providers and telephone companies providing 900/976 services must waive all reasonably disputed charges for first-time disputes with their customers. Companies must also tell these customers about the call blocking feature that prevents calls being made from their phone to 900/976 services.

    Blocking service
Telephone companies providing 900/976 service must offer the call-blocking feature for free the first time it's requested. After that, the company can charge $10 for any further requests to add or remove the feature.

Check with your telephone company for details about call blocking for 900/976 services.

    Information for consumers
Telephone companies providing 900 services must include information about these services on their Web sites. Residential phone directories must also include a reference to 900/976 services, including a statement that consumers may contact their telephone service provider for more information about them.

The reference must also remind customers that:

900/976 calls are provided to customers for a charge
    call blocking options are available
    customers may dispute the charges
In addition, the CRTC reminds parents to caution their children not to call a 900 service without permission

Phony telemarketers cheat Ontario consumers out of millions of dollars each year. While you may not be able to avoid all unsolicited calls, you can learn how to spot the ones that may be a fraud.

    1-900 Numbers
Any time you call a 1-900 number, be aware that:

•You are paying for the call — often at a minimum charge of about $35.
    •Area codes 1-900, 1-976 and 1-809 have a similar minimum charge.
•The promoter gets a portion of the money from each incoming call.
•Pay-per-charge numbers are used by legitimate businesses to charge their customers for information services; however, such businesses tell you about the fee upfront.
•One scam artist often sells to another the names and telephone numbers of people who’ve lost money.
•If you are concerned, you can order a call-blocking service from your telephone company that restricts your phone from making certain types of calls. Don’t confuse 1-900 numbers with toll-free numbers, which allow consumers to contact government and business offices without paying a long-distance charge. Toll-free numbers begin with area codes 1-800, 1-888 and 1-877.
    Two 1-900 Number Scenarios

    Scenario 1

His pager alerted the man to call an odd-looking number beginning with 1-900. He called, then sat through a long information message about health. Before he spoke with a live person, the line was automatically disconnected. Shaking his head, he hung up.

A few weeks later, he received a telephone bill for $35 with the 1-900 telephone number he had dialled earlier in the month beside the amount.

    Scenario 2

The newspaper ad said to dial the 1-900 number splashed across the page in bright red print to win a trip to Mexico. "All you have to do is call!" It sounded simple enough.

The consumer decided to take the plunge. After all, what did he have to lose?

He dialed the number and waited patiently for the lengthy information message to end. But before he could speak with someone, the line was automatically disconnected. He hung up.

One month later, the man’s telephone bill showed a $50 charge for the 1-900 call he had placed.

    Shaw Customer
Got billed for a call from 317-296-7990, a call through Triton.  I called Shaw and they advised that a large number of Customers got this on their bill.  Apparently was one of those numbers where you answer and the line goes dead, but it is somehow a call billed to you.  A little frustrated that Shaw's only real solution was "don't answer the phone for numbers you don't know".   They did take off the charge, but said they would only do it one time.

    My Name Here
I called a 1800 number left on my answering machine to alert me of a food contamination possibility about pizza,s i purchased from COSTCO When I called to learn the details of the concern there was a message informing me that number was not valid and press 1 to get the correct number after explaining why I was calling they advised me they could not find the correct number I asked were and who was I talking to they informed me they were a pay 411 service .I asked if they were charging me for this and they said no as no number could be provided . I now have a charge of 3.99 on my bill for a service I did not solicit and information that was never provided. This is in my opinion FRAUD as I was not informed this was a pay service .THEFT by charging for nothing delivered . as DECEIT by saying I would not be charged . !800 numbers should not be allowed to charge without making an advisement of their intention

We were billed $44.20 by Triton purportedly for calling a sex chatline lasting 9min @860-761-3149(a Connecticut # ) at 1:26PM. It was hilarious because that was our lunchtime at home, and would I excuse myself and then engaged in raunchy talk barely 3 ft away from my wife. We have instructed Telus to remove the charge and absolutely refused to be scammed!

    shaw rep
I wrk for shaw and have seen several of these calls lately -we are literally not allowed to remove nor credit these charges as this is a 3rd party company / and if we a rep says they have or will remove the charges*** the customer is simply billed directly from triton .( we snd it back to triton and they in turn bill the cx directly ) and will tell u if not paid that it will afect your credit rating !! WE are not " in " on it nor have any association w this company at all , thats a conspiracy theory . .  we tell cx cant credit to take it up w triton and have been told they also wont remove the charges either as they are not from them either . They are a go between a billing company that applies the charges for there carrier /crtc all the way all day these charges are outrageous ( but its not shaws or bells fault either and sick of gettin yelled atfor tritons call rates !! think about it
