'Steve Marin' is well-known here on 800notes-the call is fake. The REAL IRS does not call you-they send a certified letter with return receipt via the Postal Service. The US Treasury never gets involved

For kicks, I called the number left in the recording as described by others here.  I asked for a supervisor and when I added I was calling from the Central Intelligence Agency, they hung up.

This is a scam. It's a disgrace these people cannot be put in jail. They say they represent the IRS who are filling a claim against you. Imagine how frightening this would be to an elderly person.

I pretty much got the same call that everyone else did.  I hope those people rot in hell for scamming innocent citizens. I was wise to it as soon as I played back the recording from my answering machine. I've received other calls a while back that were similar but originated from somewhere in Texas. You also have to be careful about calling any "call back number" because another scam is to get you to "return" their call and you unwittingly call a number that isn't even in this country. The area code looks like it should be a toll free number but isnt. Then they try to keep you on the phone as long as they can to run up your phone bill at $10.00 or more per minute. You can't do anyting about the charges you get and you are responsible for paying them.

I received a message on my answering machine with the same message; saying I must call back to avoid an appearance before a magistrate.  I assumed it was a scam because I believed that I would receive such a message in a letter if it was legitimate.  My son told me to put the phone number in google and see what came up.

    IRS Scam:

The IRS does not need to sue anyone.  They send you first class letters delivered by the Post Office.  Several of them.  Ignore those, and they then send certified letters that you need to sign for.  Again delivered by the Post Office.  Ignore those and they simply freeze your bank accounts and anything else you own.  If they can do that, then why would they bother with a court case that might take them years before they get in front of a judge?  They also do not bother arresting people for a few thousand dollars for the same reasons I have already given.
