If this is Guru Aid - I let them take control of my laptop because I thought this was McAfee.  My laptop was TOTALLY DESTROYED and with the recovery discs it could not be brought back operational.  These people are BAD NEWS !  People worked on this for three weeks and concluded that they could get through the first three discs but could not load the fourth disc.

Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added nasty malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised your ID on Facebook or other social site(s), and perhaps on shopping sites.
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

What can you do immediately after such an attack?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer.
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything.
    5.  Inform your bank and credit card companies.
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  Backup non-executable personal, data files to an external storage device.  (Executable files might be infected).
    8.  You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    9.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you.
    10.  Connect to the internet only AFTER all the above have been done.
    11.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.  Even better - access a "safe", uninfected  computer, and change your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.

    NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer.  Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

You fell for one scam, and might be susceptible to others mentioned on this site:

Read that info to educate and help protect yourself!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!

Some scammers even have websites, and falsely advertise they are associated with popular software packages or computer companies; so do NOT believe a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!

I called Microsoft or so I thought. It guruaid. My new computer that was less then a week old crashed. The guy was super great and fixed my computer. After fixing it I found out that  these guys were scammers. Not true the real guruaid that I dealt with did fix my computer. These people calling are not guruaid. They are scammers. I have guruaid's number and this number calling me is not them. I get a average of 4 calls a day from scammers. Don't ever answer the phone. If u do they know it is a live line. They will sell ur number to other scammers.

If this is Guru Aid - they totally destroyed my brand new laptop.  Fortunately I had a warranty on it and took it to three sets of tech people.  Three of the four recovery disc would reload on my computer but the fourth one would not reload.  They tried totally wiping the hard drive etc.  They ( techies) told me that they did not know what Guru Aid did to my laptop but it was nonrecoverable.  I filed a claim against these folks and did get credit back on my credit card.  If it is Guru Aid  RUN FORREST RUN !

    SCAM ALERT
So i answered my business line and this happens: Guy with thick accent "I just received a call from this number."  Me: "And..." (Because i can hear the call center in the back when he speaks) Guy: "I just received a call from this number so i am calling back.  Do you need technical support?"  Me: "No."  Guy: "well i rec'd a call and i was just calling back."
I get the feeling that these people are somehow taping in to Microsoft data and intercepting service calls for Microsoft.

This is one of the most highly publicized scams.  It has been mentioned on TV and Radio, in Newspapers, Magazines, and other Print Publications, as well as a myriad of websites.  For you not to know that seems incredulous to me.

Since I purchased a tech support package with Guruaid, I have been getting calls weekly from this number.  This us not the contact number I received with my contract.  The tech who worked with me gave me a call back within 72 hours to ensure his work had corrected my problems.  Then these calls started.  Caller us Meena or Nina or something similar.

I had my computer hacked two years ago and saw their ad as Microsoft Guru saying they are one of their agents.
They wanted to take control of my computer and charge me 500 bucks so I said I have to think about it. I never called them back. They call me all the time and I just don't answer.
