I got a call today from this number: Seems like an auto message asked to press 9 to get a reduction in credit card interest rate. I pressed 9 ( why not !  I can use a reduction in credit card interest rates ). A male voice then came on and I could not quite get his name but he seemed to be saying.

"This is credit card services. Please confirm your name and give me the details of the credit cards that you currently"

I replied "Hold on, please give me details of your company first before I proceed"
He replied "As I said this is credit card services. Please confirm your name and give me the details of the credit cards that you currently"

I replied " Please slow down, I full information about your company before I give you any of my information"

He replied " GO TO HELL !!!" and hung up

WOW !!! most likely a CREDIT CARD SCAM VULTURES looking for Financial CARCASSES.

this number continues to call....i am on a no call list........how do they not get charged for this telephone abuse.............??????

There is never anyone on the line, but I do hear background noise.  Very annoying!

I am a freelance IT Security professional. I had this number call me tonight, and as I found it suspicious (since my number is unlisted, and also given that 647 is an area code only given to either cell phones or VoIP lines), I fired up Maltego (Open Source Intelligence software), and ran the phone number through it. Sure enough, it's a scam. It's a VoIP number...likely someone running an Asterisk server in God-knows-where.

Funny enough, Maltego also led me to this very website, confirming my suspicions. I'm going to continue my research, and rest assured I'll be posting anything else I might find, if anything at all.

just called in, nobody on the other side

I received a call from this number, the person acted like he was from my credit card company and wanted to help me reduce my balance.  He reached me at a business number.  He had no idea who he had called, and would not say whether he worked for Visa or MasterCard.  He could not identify which company he worked for.  I told him I was not interested in speaking with him and that I wanted him to take our number off their call list.  When I asked him to confirm that he would put our number on their 'do not call' list, he hung up on me.

I am from ontario and todays  date is Feb 10th 2011 i got a call from this #  1-647-288-1289  it was an east indian man. but before that the automated system said they can lower my interest rate on my visa / mastercard. i pressed 9 to talk to a repersentiitive and i got an east indain man. he went on to say how he can save me on  lower interest rate at 6 % and i asked  interestedly like  well what company  do you work for and the  man said yes yes i work from credit card company. He then  was continuing to expalin the interest rate and i said again  what comapny do yiou work for the name oif it. he said  credit card  company. i dunno i yelled at him saying ur a scam and fruad and hung up.

Caller ID Spoofing has been around for quite some time now.  There are many websites that offer this service for a fee.  There are even  downloadable apps for mobile phones capable of doing the similar.  Unfortunately it isn't easy, if not impossible, to track down people who are abusing this service in an attempt to commit fraud and harass people.  I urge those who are a victims to report any incidents to their local police department.  At least if more people speak up and report it, there is a better chance that the government will act up and do something about it.  Fraud and harassment by any means are crimes punishable by law.

I encourage you all to call 1-866-580-3625 and register your complaints. We will all sue when this company is found.CRTC needs multiple complaints to act on these a$$holes.

I can tellyou this, If i dont know the number i do not answer the call and delete the message from my answering machine...from what i have read from the above comments it is a scam.

Got a call today (Feb 17, 2011) from 647-288-1289 (Ontario).   They did not even bother to talk to me, just hung up. I called back, but the line was fast busy.
This person should be cut off from phone privileges.
Anyone that phones me and does not repeatedly leave a message is considered a prank call.  This is happening repeatedly and I urge the telephone company of Ontario to take action to disconnect this number immediately.

Why do they keep phoning and hanging up?

Received a call from 1-647-288-1289.  I do not answer if I do not know the caller.  I turned on the machine and they do not leave a message, which indicates that it is not a call that I want to receive or return!  I am SO TIRED of receiving unwanted calls!!!  Seriously considering canceling all phone services!
