this number just called me claiming to be FPL a "Richard Johnson"  telling me that we did not pay our 3 months power light bill. first they called from a NY number and then I told him what does NY have to do with Florida. we called FPL from their website number to varify and the operator told us it's a fraud number calling. but be careful somehow they manage to call from, the legit FPL number which is 305-442-8770 in the caller ID. we even asked this richard johnson to verify our account and he couldn't

IF you  get a  weird FPL charge ITS A SCAM

Somebody called my mother in law (elderly woman) claiming that she didn't pay her FPL bill, so she knows better not to give any information. She took the number (718) 304.0274 , I called and I told them I will call FPL directly, the guy told to go and have a cup of tea to be calm. And I was super calm, he didn't like the fact that I was going to call FPL.

Just received a call from this number at home.  Specifically asked for me and stated I was late on my FPL payment and power was to be cut-off within 3 hours if I didn't pay right away.  Call was received by my mother from a Spanish caller.  1) I don't speak Spanish 2) The FPL account is not even in my name.  I hope FPL reacts to these fraudulent calls and and clears their name.  Ridiculous waste of time and horrible thing to do to elderly victims.

Same happened to my father today. Some guy called speaking spanish saying he worked for Duke Energy and that my father was late on his DE payment. He asked us to send him the money on a pre-paid card (RED FLAG). Then he called again saying he was going to cut off our power if we didn't send him the money.

The same thing happened to us. From the start I knew it was a fraudulent call because of the telephone area code (718) which belongs to areas of Queens,N,Y. and heavily populated by spanish speaking people. The caller wanted the payment to be made right away and when asked how much was due, he could not answer...instead he asked what was the amount I paid, I told him I had forgotten and he said he needed that information to verify the amount. At this point I told to go to hell.

    VICTIM
Persons calling passing themselves as Duke Energy Representatives,  called my parents. They threatened to turn off their electricity unless paid  money due. Even though their bill is electronically drafted each month, the scammers insisted that the last two payments had not processed correctly.  My elder parent(s), also panic as others have, and paid them with some sort of pre-paid card(s). When my parent questioned the phone number shown on the caller ID, (718)304-0274, they offered to call back. When they called back, somehow they were able to manipulate to show "DUKE" ENERGY on the caller ID?  The scam was reported to the Orlando Police Dept. Also reported to Duke Energy. They are aware, but say hackers are able to get a hold of plenty customer information, and they have not been able to stop or catch the bad guys!!

Ps.  I noticed the website has a fraud alert, however most of the victims are elder, and they generally do not use the internet, so they are not being made aware of these alerts. Please write to Duke Energy to ask them to include this notice on the paper statements also.

Got called claiming they are from FPL (Florida Power and Light) A so called Emanuel, THIS IS A SCAM they tell you that they have an order to cut the power unless if the pending balance is paid. They will tell you that you need to go get a money order or card in order to pay it. DO NOT.
This has been reported with the Business Bureau and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau.

IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU FILE A CLAIM!!!! http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

There is a case building agains these people, Since they tried to call me back and I told them that Ive reported them, they proceeded with threatening my life. By doing so they earned themselves a for my case to be expedited! (Smart move by them)

FPL already knows about this scam and will tell you so if you call them and report this as well.

Hopefully no more people fall for it, please be advised.

I got a call today from a "Luis Peña," from "Duke Energy", yeah right. The number to be called back was 718-304-0274. They were trying to get my elderly parents to pay $293.14 on their Duke Energy bill which was $0.00. My mom said she would have me call back. I called back and they wanted me to go to a CVS, Walgreens, etc to get a pre-paid Credit Card. I started to call them out on their game and they started to curse at me in Spanish. Then they hung up on me.

Just received a call from this fools.  They kep repeating that Ms. Virginia Power asked to collect debt or the would have to disconnect the power service.  Are you all that stupid and ignorant that you don't even know that VA power is the name of a company and not a person?, was what I asked them.  Then, I hung up.

This scam has been going on for decades. My late Mother (who was NOBODY'S fool), received a call back in the late 80's from a guy claiming to be perched atop a power pole and threatening to cut off her power unless she agreed to pay him money NOW. When she demanded to speak to his supervisor, he hung up. She immediately reported the attempted extortion to the EMC servicing her and they told her they had been receiving multiple complaints from their customers since the scammers had been run out of a neighboring state.

As another poster has already stated: Be aware. Be safe.
