Funny, I got a call at 5:06pm from this same number on October 15th. Hung up on my voicemail. It's apparently a B.C. area code. I'm in Toronto and got 2 hangup calls for the first time in a year, and on the same day.

Received a call from this number but since I'm in Toronto I didn't want to pay for long distance charges and use up my minutes.  January 12, 2012 @12:45pm. Don't have an HSBC Account but I did have to withdraw money urgently last week. And this was the only ATM I could find that was nearby...but how could they get my #?!...Hmm...better check on my account.

Received call from HSBC.Knew my name. When I asked what is this about, she said she was just introducing herself and then mumbled, did not understand what she said. Then she hung-up.
Phoned HSBC and agent said, don't worry.Very nonchalent.Agent was NOT very helpful.
Then went to hsbc bank and teller said it is not a HSBC phone #.
    Very suspicious.

Remember,Banks do not call you for personal info.

DO NOT fall for this phone call!  Got this call a few days ago, and the person identified himself to be a manager at HSBC.  He would not identify himself, and asked strange personal questions that NO LEGITIMATE BANK would EVER do!  DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM!

A woman called from this number, asking to speak to my mother. My mother is elderly and has difficulty speaking english so I said to her, I am her daughter, what is this about. The woman said my mother had an account, a Term Deposit that was going to expire, I said yes, she asked what my mother wanted to do..ie renew the term deposit or.... I said I wanted a call from my local HSBC branch here in MOntreal, where my mother has her money. I asked her where she was calling from, not recognizing the area code 778..she said B.C. but I have to say this: Her English was very bad, she sounded Chinese not only because HSBC is Chinese bank, but just my gut.  She then went to her directory to find the phone number for our local branch and I repeated the street address 3 times, and she still couldnt find it for 15mins. She finally found the address and number of our local branch and she said she would call them to call us, to set up an appointment.

Now, I found this very very odd - as I have not received a call from our local branch.  None at all.
Then I received another call from HSBC, but from Toronto.  Not from Montreal.  I said to this agent if indeed she did work for HSBC to send it by mail. I would organize to call our local branch of HSBC here and see if everything is legit.  I did receive the certificate by mail. So the Toronto call was definently legit. but not the Vancouver one.  I am very wary.

So, as I read the comments on this site, I realized that some people who got the same calls as I, some believed it was HSBC because they also have an account (as my mother has)..but then I got wary as some commentors say they did not have any accounts with HSBC.

All I can say is this: There are many scammers out there, hackers, thieves, etc...could even be an inside job. ie a disgruntled former employee of HSBC who knows the ropes and has copies of names of clients.
If you are unsure - call the number - investigate - but GIVE NO PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE.  NOTHING OVER PHONE.
ANytime someone calls me from a number I do not know, and they ask me for personal information, I say Send me by mail. In the past I also received calls from companies asking to speak to the homeowner, asking if we rent or own our home, I instantly hang up.

I am on the NO CALL LIST, and according to CRTC, the only people who can call us are charitable organizations, survey companies and newspaper companies trying to sell their paper..
However, regardless of my number being on the NO CALL LIST, I had received strange calls from different numbers, saying they were from my credit card company, and saying they could lower my interest rate. At times there were urgent messages on my v/mail..saying it was urgent that we contact them to take advtange of a lower interest rate.
BEWARE. THese calls are scammers. I asked one person which bank they were calling from, as I have more than one credit card, they refused to say.

OK that's it, Hope this helps someone. Sorry for length of comment.
