Received a letter from SLAP, with a check attached, signed by Steven A. Smithe, pertaining to student loans. The phone number is 888-227-2141. Same address as listed above by someone else. Washington, D. C. I do think this is a scam.

I got the same letter and when I called the number it was not in service.  I thought it was real because I'm aware of the SLAP program being real, but obviously not this one! The number on mine is 888-269-0186.

Just called the phone number, they are in CA. They said, after waiting on hold and listening to what seemed to be very credible recordings referring to the department of education, I was connected to an answering service. They said they were located in Sacramento Ca but the office was located somewhere in San Diago. They wanted to call me back with a representative. Told them to take a hike and take me off the list. It seemed as if he made a note saying, "not interested" he also seemed very professional. Be careful! This in not legit.

Same as above but my number was 888-287-5947 and I'm in Texas. Very official looking but it said enrollment was limited to people in my city so call now before open enrollment closes.

Same address and basic scam but with a student loan focus. They call it SLAP (student loan assistance program) which here in Texas is very similar to one run by the Texas State Bar. That one, the Texas SLRAP (student loan repayment assistance program) offers assistance to lawyers who go into the legal aid field. I am going to contact the State Bar tomorrow.

Received mail piece with 2000 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. # 285 Washington, D.C. 20006 return address, with check  made out to me in the view of the mail piece, a few weeks ago. Inside discusses I am approved for a reduction of my student loan debt in the amount of $37,000.00. I needed to call within a few weeks to retain approval status. Endorser of the check was Steve A. Smithe. The document said it was not a check, but had all the trimmings of a check made out from the government especially with the DC return address. Ha! Said it was the Student Loan Assistance Program or SLAP. Ha! I knew that the acronym alone sounded like a scam. The Gov. is not that rank. Now checking the web I find others who have gotten the same mail piece. I did not bother to call the number because of the acronym SLAP.

My grandma got one of these letters but the number was 888 294 2701 she called gave a bunch of info and they said for her to get the reduction she had to pay them $600. They were supposed to call her back in a week to get the info for her payment. When they didn't call she asked me to look it up, I was skeptical anyway because they were asking for money then I found this thread. Thank you all for sharing your information on this scam, this thread helped save her from falling into their trap.

If she gave them all her information the trap has already been sprung.

I received the exact same letter check return address 2000 Pennsylvania Ave N>W> #285 Washington DC 20006 with a presort postage from Sacramento, ca.  The phone number is 888.357.9410 for 1/2 of my student debt. I live in CA.  I am not past due on my loan at a real consolidation gov loan program since I graduated and set up at UCSB.  This sounded like a scam, so I googled and found this site.  I did not call the number.

Hay I just received a letter which look legit from SLAP coming from Washington DC same address but what I have notice is that each person that has received this letter has a different phone number and the same address the phone number on the one I received is         888-589-8187 so we all know since there are different phone numbers it is definitely not legit and it bares no explanation.
