If Great Lakes is calling, dont respond. They are calling about a student loan.   If you have no student loan and they claim you do, someone may have stolen your id.  Anyway, once your wages are being garnished and tax refunds are being taken, they will stop calling.

I got a call from this 608-240-1310 (from WI) and left me a message for calling them back at this number 1800-236-4300. I don't recogize the phone number and the voice message was lousy and too ambigous.

It's legit. They asked for my address. Dealt with them for years. The number popped up unavailable, but they gave me that contact number. I called Great Lakes with the number posted on their website and asked the first person I talked to if that number was theirs. They confirmed it was and that it is their borrower repayment services department.  Breathe easy people.

This is Greatlakes, just a different phone # for them.  Don't ignore the calls.  Great Lakes will help you with you student lons, even if they are with other companies.  I call this number whenever I need help. It's much better than talking to my school, or to  the collection companies.

They are legit  it's Great Lakes Education.  If they are calling you,  your student loan is overdue, right?  They call to try and help you with them before they go to collections.  You're stupid to ignore them - trust me.  I have  loan that went to DCS collections becuse I ignored Great Lakes, and DCS is hell.  I work with Great Lakes all the time now on my other loans and they always help me, but they can't help me with the one at DCS now.

I received an e-mail from them and the first thing I did was look for sites like this about possible scams. After checking my credit history, calling my school, and checking my other loans, the only one I don't have a lot of information about is one I got this year from the Department of Education. When I called who I thought was supposed to have my loan for them, they didn't have it (may get it later), but they did say that Great Lakes services Department of Education loans like they did. So I called Great Lakes, and explained I wasn't comfortable with giving out certain information (ie SSN), and they told me the correct school that my loan came from, and that it was from this year. Still wary about them, I requested a copy of my MPN that they have to be sent to me at my new address, before I give them any more information about myself (ie married name). I'll post again when I'm sure that they are legit.

Okay, if you're unsure about this, check out your student loans at https://www.nslds.ed.gov/

They have a full listing of all of your loans, and you can click them to find out who is services them. In my case, it lists that Great Lakes IS servicing the loan on my account. In my case, it's not a scam, but you should check out your information before deciding.

you aren't crazy to ignore them, nor should you give out your SS over the phone to any Bozo who calls and says they are Great Lakes whatever.  If they are legit, then they can send letters to the people who owe the loans or figure out a way to identify themselves as legit.  Otherwise, F*#k 'em

Got a call from them.  I called back said they wanted my sisters phone number who used me as a reference.  I asked what company this was, and they said Great Lakes information.  I asked what do they do and she said, we're a servicing company.  I asked what do you service, and she said she can't give out that information.  Ummmm, hello?  Like I'm going to give out personal information on a family member and you can't tell me what the f**k you do?  I told her I don't participate in those kind of games, and this call is being recorded and they are to drop me from their list or I will take legal action against them.   She said she would drop me from their list.

It's a collection agency, using relatives get information on the debtor.  Sorry, no sale.

This call was from Great Lakes Education Services.

This company had called my mother asking for updated information for me. I had moved and changed my cell phone number, so they used references I listed on my student loan application when I started college. This company is LEGIT! Chance are that if they are calling asking for you, you either have a relative that is falling behind on their student loan payments, OR you yourself are falling behind on your payments.

Trust me when I say to TALK TO THEM! They already have your SS#, and that is the only way they can pull up your account status. I had a loan that was supposed to be paid monthly since June, and I didn't know (remember, I moved and changed phone numbers), and they let me defer payments all the way until June of next year.

DO NOT IGNORE THESE PEOPLE unless you ABSOLUTELY have NO IDEA who they are calling for! They allowed me to avoid collections by simply returning their call!

Again, posting in response to my previous note. After my call I received the requested Master Promissary Note in the mail, which is correct and what I have in my personal records. In my case this isn't a scam, and it is a real Student Loan Debt Servicing Agency. They service student loans for the Department of Education. If you are doubtful of this information, you, or the person who they are contacting you about, needs to check their student loans and see where they are being serviced. If they are asking you for information about someone, at least in form the person in question because they most likely didn't update their contact information and had you listed as a reference.

This appears to be a legitimate company. There information is way off but this is a legitimate company. We received a call from them yesterday. Here is what I have found on them:

    Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation
    http://www.glhec.org
608 246-1700 Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation
800 824-8725 Online Application questions - Electronic Support
800 236-4300 Account Services for Borrowers
    866 464-7855 Products and Services
    800 375-5288 Toll- Free Fax

Even though this is a legitimate company, use some common sense when you receive this call. Never give out personal information to a company with whom you do not do business. If you continue to get calls from this company, and you have the ability to, block the phone number from calling.

Also places do ask for SS often (usually last 4 digits) to confirm who you are, i know wells fargo does it when you are unable to provide other information to prove who you are before they reveal account information, (i know this from calling them, when i needed to get a new card sent out, not because they called me) now im not saying give out your SS to whoever asks, but there are companies who already have it because you gave it to them, and i doubt you can get a student loan without it.

Three months into our sutdent loan we received call to "Please call great lakes at 1- 800 236-4300. ..."

When we called them back they wanted us to ender the SS# and we didn't - but rather waited until we got a human being to talk with.  We asked who they were and they told us they were Great Lakes calling about student loans.  It was at that point that were learned were were over due on payments.  This is the first we had heard from Great Lakes.  Prior to that we had not received any mail from this lender (so no way could we now we had a payment due).  They said they had sent us several mailings (which we had not received).  They checked our address and said they would re-mail to us.  They also said they would send the payment book out to us and 9 days later we still do not have it.  So we went online and made the payment.  We followed up with a call to them asking when we could expect the payment book.  The woman said "you are past due with your payment" before she said anything else.  We responded that her records should reflect that we paid online last night.  She then said it showed that we paid online but that it would take 2 days for the online payment to be posted.

So now, we will be keeping an eye on them to make sure our credit does not go bad because of their sloppy work.

In the end, Great Lakes may be legit, but their practices may not be the most accurate.

They just called me while I was in the middle of class, so I ignored the call. I am pretty sure they manage my loans for my school, and they probably just wanted to talk about my info.
I figure I will let them call me back (hopefully while I am not in class), and I'll request contact through email.

If they don't call back, I'm going to assume that they did the wrong number. Especially since I am pretty sure that I put my parent's home # as my contact info for my student loan.
