I just received a call w/ no voice mail left from them today.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was Great Lakes as the people above said as I do have a student loan with them.  My student loan isn't past due as it's paid automatically every month from my checking, but I did just move recently so I'm guessing they wanted to get my new address as they probably just received returned mail.

They are legit.  I didn't receive any calls from them (as far as I know; I don't usually answer my house line, just my cell), but I came across this while googling the phone number.

If you signed up for student loans through Discover Student Loans, if you sign into your account, they are affiliated with Great Lakes.  I get letters from them all the time, but I didn't think they were associated with Discover (or even legit) because I was also getting mail directly from Discover Student Loans.  However, I signed into my DSL account just now and it says:

This information reflects the most recent (up to 12 months) transactions posted to your account. You may see transactions that lower your balance (Payments, Refunds, etc.) as well as transactions that increase your balance (New Loans or Capitalized Interest). Please contact a Great Lakes Borrower Services representative at 1-800-236-4300 if you need your entire payment history. Click here to return to the Summary page.

No one else has mentioned Discover here (what I've looked through anyway).  I'm guessing they could be used by other companies.  I know for sure that Discover is one of them, though.

Anyway, seeing this in my account made me feel better about it, but just to be on the safe side, before using the site that was in the letters I got in the mail (mygreatlakes.org), I'll be contacting Discover directly to double-check.

THESE GUYS ARE LEGIT. HERE IS HOW YOU FIND OUT IN YOUR OWN CASE.  Simply call your original school loan lender and simply asked have they sold any part of your loan to the DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. Your original lender will provide you with ALL the info about the sell of your loan to the US Dept. of Education.  GREAT LAKES IS THE MANAGEMENT FRONT FOR THE US DEPT. OF EDUCATION. PLEASE CALL YOUR ORIGINAL LENDER TO FIND OUT THE FULL INFO. JUST DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT.

PEOPLE HAVE COMMENTED ON THE RUDENESS OF THE CALLS. They are government workers they dont have to be nice. Trust me if you have been in the military you know what I am talking about.

Everyone this took place in response to the FREDDIE AND FANNIE CRISIS. THE US GOV PROBABLY OWNS YOUR LOAN FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE AND NOW GREAT LAKES IS MANAGING IT. ONCE AGAIN CALL YOUR ORIGINAL LENDER FOR INFO.

I got a call from Great Lakes. The man on the other end was polite, but wouldn't tell me what he wanted when I asked him what the call was about.  I just hung up.  I felt very leary talking to him.. I went with my gut feeling.  I will wait to see if I get written corrspondance from them or another call, if I am that important to them.  I found this website that had this number... it was been interesting to see who these people are.  In this day of econminc unrest and uncertainity, it pays to be very careful. If they have my phone number, more likely they have my address.

Called to tell me my account with Great Lakes was past due and to confirm mailing address. They're the ones who deal w my (thankfully small) student loan, but just in case it was a scam I didn't give them my address or any other info over the phone except to confirm that my address hadn't changed.

    Well.
So, I've received an e-mail from "Great Lakes" saying that my information needed to be updated.  Clicked on the link and I saw that SSN was required.  X'ed out the window, erased the e-mail, moved to my next e-mail.  Those sort of e-mails are more frequent by each passing day.  If your really bothered by this e-mail, why don't you make an appointment with your college's financial aid advisor?  He/She would be able to let you know exactly what you need to do, and tell you that the "Great Lakes" e-mail is bogus.

In addition, do you really think that people that found this e-mail to successfully help, come to a blog about an illegitimate website?  If you said "no," your correct.  The many supportive "Great Lakes" people on here are obviously hired on to this company to specifically get the forum users to believe that, "It's legit!"  A wag of the finger to you pesky telemarketers.  May the same misfortune dwell endlessly in your future.
    • Caller: The, oh so legit company called, "Great Lakes." (Sarcasm)

Half the people who posted on here seem completely out of their mind or something. I actually do have a student loan through this company (Great Lakes). Due to financial trouble, I havent been able to pay and I have been ignoring their phone calls and letters in the mail. But I do look at the letters I receive. I'm around 270 days over due (I know this by the letters I 've been receiving) and the person on the phone also mentioned this. This isn't some group trying to deceive you just to get your info. They were calling me in regards to seeing if I needed a deferrment of payment to prevent default of my loan.
Just figured I'd throw in my 2 cents here so that people don't think this is some scam company or whatever.

Because at first I didn't know this was their number... I've been ignoring them. Look up the number yourself! You'll see that this actually is Great Lakes.

I have no problem with them calling as my loan is past due right now, but I'm not going to answer when my caller ID only lists 800 SERVICE as the caller, and they have never once left a message. They could at least have the courtesy of doing that.

I keep getting calls from these people and I have never had a student loan.  But then again, I am not even the person they are looking for. They have been told this. They have been told to stop calling.  And they do for a week or two.  But then they start calling again, and again, and again.  If anyone else is having this problem and need their address, Great Lakes Higher Education, 2401 International Way, Madison WI 53704     (608) 246-1700   Don't know what good it will do you but there it is.

They are legit.  They ask for the SSN and such as a way to tie it into one of their accounts.  However, if you do not have an account, just keep punching random numbers and eventually you will be transfered to a representative.  You can ask them to stop calling, but that lasts about a week.  Below is their contact information if you decide you need an attorney involved.  The lady I talked to seemed surprised/stunned that I knew the information below.  Maybe now they will stop calling for someone else who is not me, but I am not holding my breath.

I'd been getting this call too. It's legit. I had a loan I didn't know about and it was past due. You'd better act on that cause it shows up on your credit report. :(

They called in reference to a parent/student loan we have with them, they simply and easily deferred the loan until after my son graduates college.  The guy I spoke with could not have been nicer.
