I did not receive a phone call from this number but I received a statement for a credit card I do not have.  This number was listed as a number to call.  I have not been able to get the name of the company by checking number on computor.  I am not going to call as I do not trust this.  As I stated I do not have the credit card thru Capital One that this statement is from and I do not owe them anything.  Can you tell me who this number goes to?

I also received a notice in the mail saying I owed $2800 on a Capital One Credit card .... I do have a card but NOT with that account number, I called Capital One and gave then the account number on the letter and they stated that the account number is NOT even in their system and that the only account number they have for me is the one I currently have! The rep also told me that HE received a letter also and he does NOT even have an account ....... appears to be a scam .... beware!

Received same scam letter in the mail, if you search in google news for "fake credit card bills" you'll come up with a WISH news story from Indiana explaining the scam. So glad my identity wasn't stolen, which was my first thought. I had the good instinct to not call the 800# though and called Cap One directly through their # on my actual card (the scam letter was for a Visa, but I have a MC) and the lady said the account doesn't exist.

I too received such a bill, and contacted the number, the person on the end wasn't very professional, demanded my Social, and I reluctantly give the last four digits that apparently didn't match their information for the account.

Concerned this may not have been legitimate, I contacted Capital one through their homepage and after several transfers and speaking with their fraud department and collections, I can verify that this number, as of today, is a valid direct line to Capital One Collections Department.

I hope this helps anyone concerned, however if they have any doubt, they should contact Capital one about the bill directly via the number on the Capital One home page.  The reason I say this is that while the Social Security Number being used may not be yours, it most likely belongs to someone that is either performing the fraud themselves, or is yet a second victim associated with it.

We received the same statement.  We have a Visa account with Capital One, but this was for a MasterCard, and the account number on the statement didn't match.  We called Capital One's main customer service department (and not the number on the statement) and confirmed that the account number is not real and that the "statement" is a fraud.

Thanks for your posts replies to glenna
I just received the same "invoice" for a Capital One credit card. I do not have such a card so I called the number on the "invoice" and got straight through to a person who immediately tried to verify my identity by asking for my social security number and/or date of birth. Because I do not have a Capital One card, I decided not to disclose this information. As I was on the phone with the guy at the number on the invoice I found this blog.

I hung up, called the number on Capital One's homepage and verified that they do not have an account for me.Thanks to all who posted so I knew it was a scam!

I keep receiving quarterly statements from Capital One for a credit card I have never had. I even checked my credit report and it isn't listed. It's a scam hoping to scare people into paying. Even the website address they list on the statement is invalid.

I just recieved the same statement in the amout of $1032.12 due. I dont own any credit cards and thought my identity was stollen luckily I came across this website... the statement looked odd to me to begin with. Thanks everyone for reporting this, I'm thankful I did not call that number on the statement!

If you read the back of the statement it states that " This is an attempt to collect a (consumer) debt (claim). Any information obtained will be used for that purpose."  I compared the back of the statement with my fathers actual statement from Capital One and it was totally different and the real statement made no mention of collecting a debt opposed the the fake statement that actually repeated it several times.

I just got a notice from CapitalOne also.  also did not receive a call, but notice in the mail.  I have never had a CapitalOne card either.  The total was $337.18...and the remittance address was Charlotte NC.  We figured out the time listed on the notice was Eastern time and that if you call during their posted hours, you would be calling between 5-2 am in Utah, which was the other address listed.  The really weird thing is that if someone were to pay this...the check would go to Capital One Services LLC.  Dont you think the FBI could go check this PO Box?  But I suppose the identity stolen would be used to open the PO Box?  I hate that these scammers are getting so clever!

Just got this "statement" in the mail for a Visa Platinum, and I don't have one.  Luckily, when I called the MC number on my spouses card, they informed me it was fraudulent.  The FBI doesn't investigate mail fraud, as an FYI, that is under the jurisdiction of the Postal Inspectors.

My ss was used to rip off the feds. Had to put an alert out.
So I check Transunion and there is a Capital One card in good standing. As of 8/13.
There is a 2011 Florida address, I left Florida in 04. I'm gonna have them cancel that card and send one to me.
    Seems fair.

If you received a letter like the above posters you need to take it over to your local PO and turn it in to the postmaster, its mail fraud..

Got one of these letters yesterday as well!  It was forwarded from an old address and is a Form 1099-C indicating that I need to declare the amount "charged off" as income on my taxes.  Never had a Capital One card....Hilarious!

We received a call a week ago saying we would receive letter in mail but it did not explain for what. We had a Capital One account years ago that was entered into bankruptcy and told them this numerous times. Got the letter today saying they checked for fraud on the account and found none and that they have not made adjustments to the bill. They can try all the scams they want but they will not receive another dime for something that was already taken care of.
