- Jesse| 3 repliesMy wife received a letter in the mail from "Capital One" stating that her information was incomplete when she opened her account. She has never opened an account. The letter even went on to say, "Federal regulations require us to ask you for this information. We also need to let you know that the Internal Revenue Service could impose a monetary penalty of $50 on you, under section 6723 of the internal Revenue Code, if you don't give this information to us when we ask for it".
The letter also had a W-9 form enclosed and return envelope.
I called Capital One customer service (from a number that friend gave me from his Capital One statement) and they told me that it was a fishing letter to obtain info. DO NOT CALL 800-258-9319. They asked me to scan the documents and email them to abuse@capitalone.com
I found a small size box and filled it with rocks, taped the envelope to it (it a "postage will be paid by addressee") and sent it off. - Kay replies to JesseI received the very same letter last week for an unpaid joint account. On back of letter was a W-9 form for me to fill out. I was stupid and called the # on the letter and one of the first things he asked for was my full SS# and I said no, I do not give this out over the phone. I told him I was going to talk to my tax person and he hung up. I then called the "real Capital One" and they looked up my name and the last 4 digits of this acct. Found none. I then told them that this was from Salt Lake City, Utah so she put me on hold again. She then came back and said they found no accts. with that # in my name or my hubbys. They told me it was a fraud and gave me the # for Better Business bureau. My tax lady told me to contact the U.S. Postal Service and talk to them. I am doing these above items tomorrow. What a shame people have to do this. My Pastor is the one who found this site for me. Praise be to God for him.

I asked for them to contact me back during a specific time slot and have heard nothing. Thanks again and I pray they enjoy their box of rocks.

- M. PesslerMy elderly father received (3) calls from this number. Not being computer savvy nor having ever had a Capital One credit card, he was quite shaken by the call claiming he was in collections for a $6K debt. He was afraid his identity had been stolen. I'm relieved to see it is a long-time scam and will be able to reassure my Dad that all is well.

- DaveReceived a letter saying that my overdue balance was paid in full. I have a Cap one card but checked the number on the statement and of course it was not my number. I checked my statements and they didn’t say anything about the amount (easy to check because I haven’t used that card in about a year). Agreed with the other posters, always use the number or website on the back of card and not the one on the letter that was sent to you. Be smart and look for info that tips you off to a scam.

- scam letter with this number| 1 replyReceived mail from "Capital One" about an account that's been closed and paid off for a while, saying I owed debt and it was an attempt to collect. This was the number I was given to call 1-800-258-9319. Do not fall for this crap! It looks legit, and even had the right last 4 numbers of the credit card I used to use, so be careful!

- CatLady| 1 replyThis number was given to me by the Capital One WEBSITE to call to change my address and by looking on here, it seems it is not the correct number? I did a search and I am glad I did because I logged into my husbands account for the numbers and this one does not show up on the list of numbers to call.
- Tygerkat replies to CatLadyIf you found this number on the official Capital One website, why would you question it?
