Unlike a lot of the responses, I do not have any home phone service from AT&T or SBC so they can't be fixing my lines. When a number comes up with a number I do not know and there is no caller ID I will not answer. If it is a legitimate call they will leave a message.

Call came in on Land Line - Caller ID showed party to be ATT (not AT&T). Woman with a slight accent, asked if this is (my proper first name)?  I said affirmative. She said she was calling from the Security Division.  She asked another question to where I'd have to answer "Yes."  I asked her what she wanted, and she hung up on me. I think it's a scam, as AT&T never - ever calls here.

I called the number back - they answer AT&T. Recording asked if I was calling from --- --- ---- I just hung up rather than confirm my phone number.  Pretty sure it's a scam.

I suspect the caller is spoofing AT&T's real number since it is clearly NOT AT&T but if you call the number you get AT&T. Isn't it awesome that the folks who designed our phone system ALLOWS equipment to spoof phone numbers? Isn't that just great. The companies hate us, and only enjoy making money off us. Beyond that they could care less about issues like this. Want proof? Page 1 of this thread is 12 years old. Yeah. They've done nothing about it.

We all dislike that callers can spoof, but most of your 'ranting' about "they haven't done anything' is based on your lack of understanding how the phone system works. Your call travels across multiple company lines/towers before it reaches its destination and multiply your phone call times billions of others per minute and you can begin to see the complexity of how difficult it is to track just one spoofed call, let alone the millions of others coming in from out of the country.

Recording saying I need to press 2 to speak to an agent; for what?  I don't have anything
related to AT&T!  Just another annoying call to screen in the future.

I did not answer the call from 800-288-2020.  I did look it up here - and saw that it was AT&T related.  I then called the number and got the following recording:
"If you're calling about regulated local exchange service, press 1.
If you're calling about any other AT&T related need, press 2"
IT COULD be valid AT&T customer care call; even a sales type call.
At least is not to sell me a TRIP OF THE LIFETIME or a new COPIER MACHINE.
    :)

why would AT&T call regarding legitimate business and than not leave a message?  this cannot be a legit call as it doesn't make sense not to leave a message as to why they called
    • Caller: is it really AT&T????

This may well be a legitimate number for AT&T but since scammers spoof legitimate numbers all the time it's wise to not give them any personal information when they call. Instead, hang up and call a known number for them, such as the one on your bill or on the AT&T website.

Automated voice claimed to be AT&T regarding abuse of my plan and that I was suspended.
The number was spoofed, and AT&T has confirmed it before, so just ignore calls from this number.

    Annoyed!!
I didn’t answer because I am totally fed up with DirecTV.  We were called twice after a looooog overseas service call to restore a lost channel that was dropped after the disk malfunctioned. It took a week of even longer  overseas calls (nearly every day) to get service restored—probably 5+ hours total—in large part because the agents are very wordy (constant chatter, aplogies, thanks-for-your-patience, “how are you today” and other annoying space fillers).  Horrible, maddening experience.  I don’t want to talk to anyone from DirecTV!
