- rob replies to TheRegnirps| 1 replyi dont have anything outstanding, as i rarely use any credit cards... so know what you're talking about before you talk.
and since they are calling a GOOGLE VOICE number that is not associated with any name or directory, or used on anything i sign up for... it's certainly a robocall scam. they are piggy backing on a real citi phone number. Citi is aware of it and is investigating. - just wonderingwhy are banks able to charge usery percentage rates?
- Caller: citi
- You must know replies to citi account supervisorOK...First of all, if this IS legitimately a CITI number, it's time to disconnect and change it. The number is plastered all over the web as fraudulent. I received five calls recently without any messages left. I DO have a Citi account and tried to reply/complete info on-line at request of text. Tech problems... call #...CLOSED! What the heck? I guess that being responsible doesn't make sense anymore. Venting abt two issues-if you even are a supervisor. This is nuts.
- phishing call receiptPhishing call originates from Cynthiana, KY. Caller identifies as Citi. Report fraudulent calls to Citi by calling the phone number on your credit card. Do NOT call the caller back to the incoming number OR 800 number. Citi's fraud department knows about the scam. File reports with your local phone carrier, the FBI, the FCC, and the FTC. All have complaint forms online. The more people who report, the more likely the phone companies and government will investigate and prosecute.
- Stephanie HenleyNumerous calls which hang up shortly after phone is answered. Calls disrupting small business.

- Erin| 2 repliesI received a message from 800-388-2200 and when I called the number, an automated message asked for my credit card number. I didn't key it in and waited for a rep. It seemed fishy so I hung up and called the Citi phone number on the back of my card. The Citi rep checked my account and said no call was made and my account is fine. Be careful about responding to such calls!
- Colonel F replies to Erin| 1 replyI am getting calls from this number recently on my cell and at work. I know I am delinquent to Citi for a cc I have which leads me to believe it is not fraud. I was behind on paying my cc and prior to sending to collections, I worked out a payment plan. As of recent, I no longer could continue paying. The result.....well, I am now getting hounded by this 800-388-2200 number.
Only 1 time out of the 30+ times they have called me have they left a voicemail. It was automated and it stated it was Citi and to please call them.
Since I didn't fullfill my obligation to pay them, I believe they no longer have patience and this was immediately sent to perhaps an internal collections department which may
or may not be Citibank. This number then could be a third party that is collecting on behalf of Citibank, I do not know. I went online and I could still access my account, so I believe the account is still thiers and it has not been sold off. My account, at this time, is over the limit with excessive fees coupled with what I believe is a rate that is almost predatory.
I am interested in why people believe this is fraud. Certainly, if you dont have a Citi account that would make sense. Just seems very real to me, but maybe I a victim of fraud. I cant pay them anyway, so really doesnt matter right now.
I will TRY to work with collections on a settlement later. Its all so tricky. - Jerry| 2 repliesyou all do realize that it's AGAINST THE LAW for legit debt collection to call a business. (they'll tell ya otherwise, and any lawyer will ttake the case against them).
A legit Debt Collection also breaks the law when asking for your full social security number or credit card number.. they have that information and would only require the last 4 digits for verification.
it's also AGAINST THE LAW for them to call cell phones (again, check the law, not with them, they'll make any excuse, legal or not).
Also remember, any debt past the statute of limitations (varies from state to state, longest is 5 years on debts in any state, some are only 3 years) makes it against the law to harass you, as the debt should be written off, but if you admit to the debt, you're stuck because they record the calls and you admitted to it.
Debt collectors purchase unpaid accounts for pennies on what is owed, then try to collect the full amount plus interest (or try to settle down, where they still make a profit), this is what they do and how they make their money. The original debtor sells the old accounts to get back some of the money, and the debt collector tries for the rest to put in his own pocket. Many debt collection agencies, and especially debt consolidations, are scam, fly by night companies, who hire min. wage idiots to handle everything.
Very often, they get one number wrong in a phone number, or only have a name and approx. area that name is from, find someone with the same name, and start harrassing them. What do they care? they dont.
in the case of this phone number, CITI is aware that someone has 'piggybacked' the 800 number and is scamming people, they ahve made this clear many times, it's jsut taking awhile to track down who it is.
if you really want them to stop calling, wait till they call you and someone comes on the line, then talk dirty to them, get very sexual.. you wont get in trouble, cause they called you! tell them you'll send them money if they suck something, or bend over for something.. they won't call again. - ColonelF replies to Jerry| 1 replyThats great information Jerry thanks. I am needing more info on how to better handle this situation. I found it interesting that they had my work desk number. It must be somewhere. Ugh. After I saw the number calling me at work, I checked my Citibank account. When I logged in, it immediately asked me to put in my information and verify it. I didnt hesitate to do so and put in my cell number as to verify THAT is my ONLY contact number.
People say they call Citi to let know about the 800 number and that is not what I want to do at the moment. I dont exactly want to contact them and have to explain how I cant pay them, so I cannot inform them about this number.
If this number is fraudulent and it is the only number calling me, why isn't Citi pursuing me for past due payments? Just being devils advocate in pursuit of understanding, but I have to believe somewhere in that rediculous cc contract they make it thier right to get money owed to them somehow withing the law. Otherwise, wouldnt everyone be not oaying and raking them thru the coals? - Colonel F replies to ColonelFI am hoping Citi sells off my debt. Pennies on the dollar yes. They can come after me and when they do I will gladly, not without alot of resistance, I will try to settle this account. Obviously, the settlement will be much less than my owed balance because they fet it for pennies on a dollar. With that, 20% or less is my goal. They make money, I save money. Win win. This is so tricky because of the legalities. Any advice on knowing indicators when the debt is sold off?
I agree that collectors will hunt you down. Not a fan. Example was my wife had a debt...charge off...and some dude from another state contacted anyone with my name so they were calling my family. That is a nuisance but when they ate calling older people in the family, w landlines...you cant fend them off entirely. They are sharks and they are liars. They are going to play the game and harass as much as they can to get you to break. I dont want the calling family sh-t going on. So, I plan to call them and deal with it head on. Part of me thinks this number is those credit people....alot of people in this forim say it is fraud so great to know and thank you for the heads up.
Debt collectors, I read, will buy debt from citi. If they cant get it collected, they will sell it to another collector for less so they still make money....then they will call and harass....it goes on and on and on until it is settled.
I would love to say they are breaking the law and prove it. However, not many can substantiate such an argument with a minimum wage collector fighting for $ and to keep thier job. Plus, how do you tell others in your family to do this he same. Its not all that easy. Scare tactic works with everyone especially the elderly.
Thanks everyone for their infomation. - jerrycolonel.. once they sell off your debt, it goes on your credit report2, and it's a huge negative.. keep that in mind, your credit score is hgoing to plummit... which will cause any other creditors you may have accounts with to not give you any leeway with those accounts. They see this in your credit reports and figure if they dont hound you, they wont see anything, then they sell those debts off, and you got more on your credit report.
While they can't legally force you to pay back once the statute of limitations has passed, it's all still in your credit report for years after that.
now there are legit lawyers who deal with these situations, and actually work with the creditors for a reduced payment plan.. they get paid for doing it from your monthly payment..as well as report to the credit reporting agencies that you are paying it off. just make sure it's a real credible law firm and not one of these TV ads or debt consolidation scams who claim to work with credits when all they do is add up debts, call the fly by night debt collectors, and milk you for twice as much as you own in the long run, then your credit doesn't get fixed like they promised because they don't have the authority to do that. Many ofthese fly-by-night companies claim they have a lawyer overlooking everything, only to find out, it's not a real lawyer, or it's a scummy lawyer who's not even allowed to practice where you live (usually a dime a dozen ambulance chaser who passed the bar in las vegas because he couldn't pass it anywhere else).
Best thing to do is litterally call a real law firm and get advice if you actually do have a debt you can't pay.. sometimes, chapter 11 or chapter 7 bankruptcy is the best course of action.. may take 10 years to clear up, but it's not as bad as people think it is, because it shows the effort on your part.
as for thise number, again, it is a citi group number for their debt collections, but, it's been hijacked.. Citi has been trying to track who's doing it for years and hasn't been able to (that's directly from Citi themselves). it goes back to Predient Bush and his deregulations on everything allowing nonsense like this to get out of hand. - jerryalso colonal..
If you are past due with Citi, they will send letters via post office, they will try to call your house, or any number you put on your account.. Citi themselves will work within the law.. again, this 800 number has been hijacked.. unfortunatly, Citi isn't doing enough to stop it. - Colonel Forbin| 1 replyOk. I caved. I called citbanks number on the back of my card. I asked to speak to the fraud department. They confirmed this number is not fraud rather it is thier collections department. This number is not fraudulent, but you will only be convinced by finding out yourself.
I had to know for myself so I took safe route and contacted the number on my card first.- Caller: Citibank Collections
- Colonel FThanks Jerry
I am not overly concerned about my credit. Rather just pay this off and move on. I am patient and can wait 5-7 years for my credit to bounceback. I am going to work with thier collections and see it we cant come to an agreement.- Caller: Citibank Collections
- mACCEVERYDAY you call my company, and it's just an automated message, that doesn't even give the whole message as to why you're calling, just the number....As a receptionist it is BEYOND aggravating when the phone is ringing off the hook and this is one of the calls.....finally called the number today and told them to take the company off the list.....the girl on the phone was extremely defensive and nasty and to be honest, you're the one that is preventing ME from doing MY job.

- Live Free in NH replies to poohAre you crazy Pooh? DO NOT explain anything to these identity theft crooks! The more info you give them about your mom and dad and their recent or not so recent passings, the better chance they have to create fake accounts in both their names. You have now given them the ability to search the obituaries in your local area for deaths in that time frame. They will be able to find full names with birth dates and then search for their actual residential address. You did a fine job in helping them out!
- Live Free in NH replies to CaineThat is all true Caine but what the scammers usuallly do is just get the software to spoof any number they want! They can generate any name and number they like to show on your Caller ID.
It is time for the FCC, FTC, and the DoJ to work together and put some real security on the Caller ID technology to lock out all these scammers and theives. I do not expect any of our phone companies to do this as they simply don't care. What a shame that they broke up AT&T and all the Big Bells. It may have been a monopoly, but we did have phone security! - Live Free in NH replies to citi account supervisorDream on naive fake 'citi account supervisor'.
