- Jenny replies to Scammers| 1 replyYes! They said 'it was a matter of confidentiality' that I do not tell anyone, as my bank representatives (which, mind you, are RBC, not CIBC) may be involved in some fraud and may be using my data. They tried getting as much of my personal information as possible (got only the debit card number), and then my RBC online banking got locked due to someone trying to hack their way in.
- Tygerkat replies to JennyWell, since you gave them you debit card number, i hope you called your bank & had it cancelled.
- NancyCaller posed as a CIBC fraud investigator. Spoke with a thick accent, and said his name was Paul Stewart. (Beware of two first names!) 'Paul' gave his ID and extension numbers for verification. He also had a serious/urgent tone. Pretty sophisticated operation. He then said someone in Calgary, Alberta had attempted to make two online purchases with my CIBC card. When it was blocked, she called CIBC to tell them she was me and she was travelling. Her answers to the security questions raised concerns so they called me to confirm I wasn't travelling. I confirmed. (All sounds pretty legit, eh?) Next they wanted to go thru other purchases that were made recently to confirm if they were mine. Again, they stayed true to the actual process. 'Paul' asked me to give him the expiration date on my card. Without thinking, I did. Next he asked for the number of the card starting with 4506. That's when my red flag finally started to fly. Those aren't the first four digits of my card. Paul seemed pretty taken aback. Stumbled around for a bit and then apologized for the mistake. Continued to push for the number. I said I wasn't comfortable giving that over the phone to someone who - if legitimate - wouldn't need me to ask for it, he'd have access to it on the computer in front of him. Paul then insisted I could google the caller ID (the 1-800 number) to confirm it's CIBC and asked for my card number again. At thay point, I said I'd call CIBC on Monday to clarify the situation. Paul objected. I repeated. Paul hung up. No question it was a scam.
