I understand how each of you feel, as i am going through the same issue with debt collectors. My son who was 23 passed away in May, and the calls and bills then the debt collectos. I was advised to get a fax number fax the copy of the bill or collection along with copy of death cert. and surrogates letter, and on your cover request that if they still need to contact this person they can do so by mail, do this once, when they send another letter send the same info along with the fax confirmation, and tell them you will be giving this information to your attorney.

this woman from Philips and Cohen called me earlier this week, do not know how she got my phone # she wanted info on moms assetts, I told her there isn't any, call Suntrust Loan office in Orlando, Fla. Her home went back to them as not paid off. The # was a 1-302 whatever #. Some one else called and left message only to leave 1-800 and then hung up on my voice mail. I changed my message on voice mail to "Please leave your number and brief message" My mom just passed away October 28th, 2009. How cold these people are. I told my family not to answer phone @ all, let voice mail get it. I have always been told when person dies, credit cards die with them, was told this by a lawyer too.

A message was on my answer machine regarding my late sister-in-law about her final affairs. She has a husband so why they called my number and our last names are different.  Her name was Ann Marie with extention 2543 and gave me a claim number.  I will not be calling her back as I am not sure how she got my name or my phone number.

Sorry to hear about your mother, mine passed away Oct 15, 2009. Got a call from "Ashley Burksfield" with this number and left and extension number and a "case" number. Then Kevin Downs called today but seemed to think he was talking to someone as he kept saying "Hello?" but didn't leave much of a message. They don't identify who they are calling from but let me tell you this. My mom had no assets and any she did have would have been seized by the state of Ohio in an attempt to "recover" costs from her medical care. As it was she owed one credit card a sizeable sum, and they stopped calling when I sent a copy of the death certificate, then they indicated we would be contacted by a company that "specialized" in collecting from deceased peoples' estates. These scumbags don't know any names but are fishing for anyone who took care of her affairs. I'm not telling them anything but they will get an anonymous letter to bug off

What happened here is the company you were paying sold the remainder of the debt to this other company and now they're trying to cajole you into paying for fear they won't get their money. They paid less than what you owe so this is how they make their money.

I too got a call from (800) 477-6441 with this pattern:

Rebecca Tate called (nice name, nice voice)
Was willing for me to pass on a message
Mumbled the name of the company, would not spell it at this time
Cited a "matter to address concerning the estate of . . . ,"
Left phone number and a reference #

Thanks to all you people who have written in I now recognize the vultures . . .

Some lady from Phillips and Cohen called (they use different numbers), and said she wanted to speak to the person handling my mother's estate.  I gave her the name and city, state where the probate lawyer is, yet, she said "Okay, well can you get me the phone number?".  I told her I do not have the number as I do not contact the probate lawyer and I am not the administrator of estate, and she asked when she could call back and I could give her the information.  She could easily look up the information herself on whitepages.com. She keeps calling the house several times a week with no avail because everyone in this household works!

received this call from a Dana?  Martin, wanting to know if I was handling the estate of my daughter, who left now will and had not estate, nor money.  She did not identify herself, except to request a return call.  My daughter left many medical bills due to her progloned illness - but I'm not about to be a party of this.  Thanks for the blogs.

Thank  you all for the info.  I received two  letters from them regarding my deceased spouse's credit card.  He passed with a small balance on the card.  They said for me to contact them with info regarding the estate (there is none), and if they don't hear from me within 30 days of receipt of the letter they would assume I owe the money.  And now one week after receipt of the letter they are calling me.  I am in the middle of filling out paperwork for  his credit card protector to cover his outstanding balance.I will ignore them then.

they need to spend more time on research, I did a Social Security Death Index name search & that person died Jan 2010 in a nearby town. All they should be allowed to do is go by old credit history contacts & nothing else.  I guess they are gonna try to contact everyone with that same lasst name in my are, and probably nationwide they are so ignorant- I am tired of this crap & doing their work form them! I never even hear of the 'late' person they mentioned on my recorded call, that person has my same last name (my married name) & I have had the same phone # for over 20 years- I called & told them all that & to take my number off/out, etc. no more-  We should be able to sue for a set amount per false calls for this stuff.  I get these kind of calls several times a month from companies for people that don't even have my last name or even close to it, they are just to lazy to do the real research they need to do to locate the proper people. They just rely on computer match ups to something they decide may be a good match. I am ready to start calling them Div of Corp lists owners of companies, then look up their name, get the #'s start calling see how they like it, or maybe sent them multiple emails & mailings. the last part of their name is correct assoc (ass)

These are scum debt collectors trying to collect funds owed by dead people.  I've been getting calls from these folks since my husband passed away in early 2009.  They are chasing corporate credit cards.  I was never an officer or employee of his company and I have no legal obligation whatsoever to pay corporate debts, especially when left with children and no life insurance.  They can rot in hell for the amount of "empathy."  I don't understand how they can call after the one year to collect a debt after death rule, but they do and I ignore their calls, never answer the phone.  I've heard enough of their messages to know what they are calling about and have no desire to hear their spiel.  I don't owe the money.  I think they buy debt that credit cards have written off, hoping to collect something, anything, to "settle the debt since you know your deceased husband would want you to pay this debt and make it good."

Some slim ball named "Andrew"  from "Cohen and Phillips" calls me about my deceased father owing about $200 for a credit card he never had. I handled all my father's affairs. The  call registered on my caller ID as 'Unknown Caller', with a number 1-800-477-6441. This company uses Intelligus and site similar to track down relatives of deceased pewople, hoping guilt will trigger a payment. This is a scam.

I called the "collection specialist" at Cohen and Phillips back , and after I got done with this a**hole, he was almost in tears. I told him my father was dead, however I would send Cohen and Phillips Company  a shovel for him to go dig dad up,  and any money he found, he and his company can keep. I then told him to go dig up his mother  and shake her 'love purse' and see what falls out. Evidently 'Andrew' was offended,  studdered like a drooling idiot apologized to me and hung up. I look forward to their next call. Hopefully they will have a female call this time. That I will thoroughly enjoy!!

    Don't Call Me ®
I received another message from them in an odd way this time. What I heard (on my answering machine) sounds like a mother and child(ren) sitting at the dining room table eating and talking as I could hear what sounded like silverware hitting the plate as the discussion happened between them. My conclusion is that this is a home based business preying on the deceased that needs to improve upon their phone automation and tactics. They have been calling my home for the last couple/few months asking to speak to someone who is handling the estate of a name I do not recognize.
