I received a letter saying that my credit card application was declined and they needed more info :
Old Navy via bank fraud depart,. I stupidly gave them the info when i told them I didn't apply and they said they would alert the credit agencies. Now I don't know what to do, I called an froze my credit report but feel vulnerable. I had had credit card fraud alert last week so thought this was connected.

This might be connected.  There is a lot of good info on ID theft on the internet, and here is a link to info on this site:
    https://800notes.com/arts/9-things-to-do-when-your-identity-stolen
ID theft is serious, but don't panic.  Alerting the big 3 credit reporting agencies yourself is a good move.  There are 2 possibilities.
    - One is that the call from Old Navy was real, and that someone applied for credit in your name.
    - Two, that could have been a phishing attempt to get your info.
The first possibility implies that someone has enough of your personal info to try and apply for credit - DOB, SS#, etc.  Not a comforting thought, but if you know what is possible, you can start shutting the doors in their face.

    card collector
My experience is that this is a valid number of a servicing company used by card issuers.  Sometimes, if there is a question or problem with a new credit card application, other than something major that totally rejects the application, you'll get a request to call this number to 'fix' whatever problem was in the application that prevented immediate approval.  It could be as little as a typo in your application, which is what I had, and after correcting the 'problem data' the card was issued as we spoke.  Note that they've already pulled your credit report when they ask you to call, so they already have your data as it was/is in your credit report. (in my case they pulled TransUnion, fwiw)

If you did NOT apply for credit and get a request to call this number, then you might want to call it anyway as possibly someone applied for credit in your name and you'll want to cut that down right away by telling them you didn't apply.  But I'm guessing that if they don't get your call back they are going to trash the application anyway.

And note that if you *RECEIVE* a call with this number as caller ID, I'm thinking you probably should consider it suspicious.  This is a number you call, NOT a number that calls you.

    Hope that helps someone.  Cheers.

I have not received any calls from this number...yet. I got a letter in the mail to call this number order to complete the application process for a retail store card (which I had applied in store about 5 days prior to getting the letter). I opted to call the 877 number printed at the bottom of the receipt the cashier had given me that day instead. The rep asked for the date of application, last 4 digits of my ssn, first and last name. I told her I had the keycode and ref numbers from the receipt and she was fine with those. She said she'd transfer me to the applications rep...This rep asked me to confirm my name and address. Done. I was approved. No ssn needed.

I asked her about the 800-480-0186 number on the letter and she said SYNCHRONY FINANCIAL has several numbers and that may be one of them; she also said they did send a letter out to me recently.
...I had been a victim of identity theft a while back and put alerts on my credit reports. This may have been why I needed to confirm my address and info with them.

I got the exact same letter! Who should we report this to? Do we need to call the Credit Bureaus?

What you do depends on whether or not you have recently applied for the credit card referenced in the letter.  The steps that B.T. took in the post directly above yours are a good guide on how to proceed.

Are you expecting that person to come back after 4 years and reply to you?  I am not sure what you think the credit bureaus will do, unless you intend to put a credit freeze on your records.  I see that there is an article that you should read here:  https://800notes.com/arts/9-things-to-do-when-your-identity-stolen
and the FTC has information here:  https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/report-identity-theft

I received a message stating they needed to verify some information for a Lowe’s credit card I was applying for. Told me to call this number and provided me a reference number. I called the number and they asked me to verify my home address and last 4 of my social. Cynthia stated that someone had applied online on the 15th. She put a note and reported it as a fraudulent application and told me to contact the credit reporting bureaus and put a fraud alert on all of them, which I already had done while on the phone with her.

I received letter from Synchrony Bank.  Requesting that I contact them for additional information regarding my request for a credit application with Amazon Credit Builder. I called and stated my concern about the letter. I told the rep I didn't sign up for credit with Amazon and certainly don't need any credit builder service. The man then told me I might be a victim of attempted fraud. He  asked me for my full social security number to inform the credit bureaus that I did not apply for a credit card. I said no way. He then asked for my home address and I indicated they sent me the letter he has my address.  When we completed the call, instead of thanking me for calling Synchrony Bank, he thanked me for calling Amazon.

The letter in the mail makes this a federal offense does it not?

Why don't you go to the official website for Synchrony and use the phone number given there? That way you know you're calling a legitimate number for them

I received a mailed letter from Synchrony Bank, PO Box 965002, Orlando FL 32896-5002 saying they required additional information from me to process my "recent credit application with Lowes." I am advised to "call 800-480-0186 in order to quickly complete this requirement."

I haven't recently applied for credit with Lowes and based on all the similar phishing scam mailers others have documented with this exact same letter, I have no intention of calling them, much less provide them with any personal info.

I received a letter that asked me to call Synchrony Bank about a credit card aplication.  I was concerned someone had applied with my name so I made the call.  After giving the guy information ( I have other accounts with Synchrony) I was very uncomfortable.

Received letter saying I'd applied for a credit card from LOWES and needed to call for more information.  Called.  Repeatedly asked for SSN, didn't want any other information, just SSN over and over.  Hung up.
