Apothaker are scum bags.  They buy out charged off debt from major credit card agencies and then sue people who can't afford to pay their bills.  We've been sued three times by these idiots, judgements were served and we still are not paying.  They call and leave a recorded message about every other day and are not willing to work with you.  We don't even answer the phone...just have our ringer set for 1 ring and then it goes into a generic message.  They call at all hours of the day and night too.  

We've contracted a lawyer to take care of them.  I'm sick of the way they treat people who are down on their luck and can't afford to live.  They don't care and are only looking to make a buck.  Good luck to all of you who get these calls...you are not alone.

This may be a reply to a posting from four years ago, but it is valid. Yes, it is true that your bank accounts can be frozen, and the bank can be ordered by the courts to turn over any funds to the person who submits the lien. This can only happen after a judgement is obtained by the entitie(s) suing you.

Rumors not withstanding, anyone can buy charged off debt and try to collect it from the debtor. The fact that applies here is the statute of limitations. For example, if the statute of limitations in your state is 5 years, and no action has been taken on the debt, no one can collect, as it has passed the statute of limitations. It is advisable to do your "homework" thoroughly, as certain actions on the debt in question can "restart the clock" (as it were).
