I was looking at the Allstate Insurance Company website and all of a sudden a security warning message screen popped up. I immediately shut down the browser and ran virus software which was negative. I then came to this site to see above comments.

Same thing - big red screen popped up in Chrome with a "Danger Will Robinson! Danger!" type message along with audio warning that the computer was infected. Yeah, right.

Gave them a call..  if you're gonna do something like this at least make it somewhat believable. Rep barely knew what to say, but worked for "microsoft."

After reading the news on the CNN site and then googling info about wood and reading two sites (seemed reputable to me) about cedar fences, that red warning screen popped up.  Closed down the laptop, ran Windows Defender which said there were no threats.  Probably spyware so if you see this, don't click on that red box anywhere.  Also, if you read the warning in the red box, you should realize that the English is slightly 'off'.  And the quality of the red box is very poor.

This is a browser hijack embedded in an ad from an ad sever on one of the websites you visited. The site has no control over the ads served up and the ad server companies are less than proactive about screening ads submitted to them for these scareware pop-ups.  IF your browser supports it, an ad blocker or pop-up blocking add on will help prevent the majority of these scam windows from popping up.

A big red box saying a Trojan and to call the 800 number, a guy answered asked what the message said then the phone number asked for permission to connect but then hang up. Mysteriously there was no more issues and seems fine again. Was this a scam or legit.

Scam. Read Mike-in-MD's post. Then take your computer to a physical repair shop and tell them what happened. You should also change any passwords and financial information you have on your computer.

Called the # on my screen after my computer froze/red screen, repeating message over&over "Do not turn off or restart your computer. Very suspicious when I was informed that I needed to PAY for security repair. Hung up, put computer in airplane mode to shout off wifi, restarted computer, EVERYTHING WAS FINE! This is a scam

I called and bitched them out and told them they needed to tell me how to reinstate my tabs without theirs.  I wish I could track them down.  What BS.  Of course they hung up.

It's a scam. Based on other reports, they'll try to convince you that you've been infected with malware and that you need to pay them to fix it. In some instances they connect to the system, or give you an exe to install, which actually ends up embedding keystroke monitors or other malware. After you pay them to fix the problem, they tell you you're good, but your system is still infected. At some point down the line, if you use your system for banking, you become a victim of bank fraud or even identity theft.
