Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- No One| 2 repliesHere's the deal people. It is a collection agency. They can't tell you who they are directly unless they have the debtor on the phone. They have informational bases that they use to track down family and friends, which also includes social media. So, if you owe money because you haven't paid your bills, save your credit and pay. They are only allowed to call once a day as well. There are a lot of laws to protect you, look into them

- AnonHas called me twice - didn't answer. Left me a voicemail both times, calling me by my first name (my VM does not have my name in it) in reference to a person whose name I don't recognize. They leave a reference number behind for me to use if I call back. I won't be calling back since all of my student loans are in good standing and I don't have anything in collections. I'm curious, but not enough for them to hook me on the line for something.
- Anonymouse replies to No One| 1 replyThat's the problem -- they may be a collection agency but they do not follow the rules. They've been harassing me at home and at work multiple times a day to locate my sister, who I sadly haven't spoken to in years. That's 4 different violations, on top of the shady questions they ask when they call -- contacting me multiple times a day, at my workplace (after explicitly requesting they stop calling as it is a place of business), and for someone else's debt that I am not responsible for are all finable and litigatable offenses under the consumer protection act. And then there's the fact that both my home and cell numbers are on the Do Not Call list and they are NOT allowed to call numbers on the DNCL to try and collect someone else's debt -- just the owner of the phone number's debts. In fact I'll be the one getting money from them, because they choose not to play by the rules and harassed the wrong person. And from the posts here and elsewhere it is a common tactic of theirs, which borders on identity theft as well. Know your rights and protect them from crooks like these.
A good start:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection - BigA replies to AnonymouseFirst, you should have sent them a certified, return receipt letter telling them to cease and desist calling you. You seem to have the information at your fingertips, now put it to goo use. "And then there's the fact that both my home and cell numbers are on the Do Not Call list and they are NOT allowed to call numbers on the DNCL to try and collect someone else's debt -- just the owner of the phone number's debts" The DNC does not have anything to do with debt collection calls. This is clearly explained at the DNC site. While you may be able to file a TCPA claim, this does not have anything to do witht eh DNC which is governed by the Telemarketing Sales Rule. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0198-telemarketing-sales-rule
