- FrancisBe cautious folks, in many states even sending them $1 will reactivate the statue of limitations on the debt as it re-ages the account. So while it may be past the SOL, send in a buck and bang, it's a live debt again for the next 3-5 years! I did get the credit card offer, I throw them all in the trash so I missed the part about the old debt but noticed it was a secured card and then it converts to a real card after it gets paid back.

- legalhound replies to CherPoetSometimes these guys re-age it anyway by putting it on your credit report as if it were new debt. That is one big reason to check your credit report at least annually. Most of what they buy cheap is old cell phone debt. The federal statute of limitations for phone bills, including cell phones is 2 yrs. After that they can't sue you no matter how much they threaten it.

- BudWe had a call from this number around 8:15 this morning. I was still in bed, so I pressed "Talk" on my phone, placed the phone on the bedside table, and went back to sleep. Almost an hour or so later when the alarm clock awakened me I disconnected the call, and the phone registered that the call had lasted for 50 some minutes. Apparently the caller never did disconnect!

- Melody replies to Larry| 1 replyThey just call the number, they don't care who owns the number. They try to convince you that you have a debt and if you send them $$ they will make it go away.
- BigA replies to Juan MYou need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation, cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested). Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it. Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter. You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it. Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front): http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
