I received a scam call from (caller ID showing CITIBANK 1-212-626-7836) saying urgent, and to call 1-800-986-5706.  Watch out! Don't bother to call back, as reported by others already.

I got a letter saying that citibank needs some missing information on the acount #### so call the 800-986-5706  immediately. I never had that account and the letter was mailed to my old address, so found it suspicious and googled the phone number. Hence I'm here. I got goosebumps when I found out this is a scam. People, watch out and ask the employee at the citi location near you whenever before calling any number.

Okay, I'll bite - you know who called you. So why did you look up the number?
That being said, while this may be a legitimate number for Citibank, there is no guarantee the caller is actually from Citibank. Phone numbers are too easily spoofed to trust some random caller with personal information. The smart thing for Citibank to do if they want to stay in compliance with this Security Bank Act would be to mail information regarding it and not expect their customers to give personal information over the phone to the aforementioned random caller.

Were you talking to Citibank? There some missing pieces to your post.  If you were getting e-mails, where does this phone number fit it exactly? If you are a Citibank customer, why would they need your SS, DOB or address?

This site tracks incoming phone calls about 95% of the time.  With so many indications that scammers are spoofing this number, your post stands out and could be interpreted as a Shill Post.

It seems to be Citibank in fact. They want your info to close down your account, but they do send you a check with the remaining balance.

That's [***].  It's 100% a scam, and you could well be part of the scam. The letter purports to reference  the last four digits of the cardholder's account, to make the letter look authentic, but the numbers are just four random numbers. (They are hoping the cardholder doesn't check.)  I called the number, and the guy is very easy to trip up.  For example, the scammer's letter lists a "Reference Number" . When you ask them to pull up that Reference Number and tell YOU what the issue is with your account, they stammer and then put you on hold indefinitely.  They are just trying to coax personal identifiers out of you for identity fraud purposes.

I did the same, this is cit. Call the number on the back of your ATM card and citi will verify this is a legit letter. But I wont trust incoming calls with that number because they can be spoofed.

I got a letter asking me to call this number and furnish some info.  I suspected it was a phishing hoax so I ignored it.  A few weeks later my Citi trust checking account was blocked.  I went to my local bank and was told I needed to provide that info.  It's their know-your-customer (KYC) program.  I suggest you do not call that number but visit your local Citi bank branch right away.

So, you are a "legal entity customer" or someone who is in charge of such a company such as a CEO?

If these letters are legitimate, which I doubt they are, they are limited in scope to the following entities:
    https://support.smslp.com/kb/a1099/fincen-cdd ... y-customer.aspx

Q:  Who is a legal entity customer?

    A.  The Rule defines a legal entity customer as a corporation, limited liability company, other entity created by the filing of a public document with a Secretary of State or similar office, a general partnership, and any similar entity formed under the laws of a foreign jurisdiction that opens an account.  The definition also includes limited partnerships, business trusts that are created by a filing with a state office, and any other entity created in this manner.

A legal entity customer does not include sole proprietorships, unincorporated associations, or natural persons opening accounts on their own behalf.

Based on that, no regular person would be or should be receiving this type of request for information confirmation.  Further, the documents needed to prove identity would probably have to be taken into the bank branch itself to be copied.

I am not a "legal entity customer".  I am a natural person having an account on my own behalf for my revocable living trust.
