Received a telemarketing call from eBay which I most certainly did not appreciate.  They had my full account name/profile and transaction history, so I surmise that eBay supplied my information to them despite the fact that I had never given any permission for eBay to share my information with any other party for direct marketing.  To further the aggravation eBay customer support would not remove my phone number from my profile, just referring me around from dept. to dept.  I may just need to cancel my eBay account altogether, I guess.

Well if *I* were a scammer and I wanted to continue doing it what I would do is randomly have some outgoing calls be sweet & innocuous while the others would be more direct about getting personal information.

    Why?

Well to create confusion on websites just like this!

    never give up, never surrender.

For me, same number, Laura from eBay just letting me know about a GivingWorks workshop.  Sounds like a callcenter where they read a script.  I wouldn't recommend giving anyone you don't know your bank account number or personal information over the phone anyway, especially if you don't solicit the call.

and so what if we are paranoid have you checked your ebay bill? you would be a little less relaxed paying $4.20 for a 99 cent sale. plus paranoid is just another term fo r hieghtend awaareness.

I just got a call from this number and it seems legit. In this case, the rep was promoting a local and upcoming e-bay conference.

Interesting -- I checked my preferences, and all notifications, including phone calls, are TURNED OFF. They called anyway.

You can't opt out of it by going to your account. My preferences are OFF and I am still receiving these calls.

I received a call from 801-545-1800 on July 16 & on July 18, 2008. I didn't pick up the call, because I recognized this number from posts such as this one, about the above 801 number claiming to be from so-called "e-bay" sales promotion reps. Thanks to all contributors to this post who have informed the rest of us from being harassed by these scam artists, if that's what they really are.

This number is legitimate, its the outgoing number that eBay uses for its Salt Lake City branch...could be anything from an outreach call to Trust and Safety issues.  I spoke to my ebay rep on this number.   Not everything is a scam.

I get calls from this number from time to time. They come from a legitimate eBay call center in Utah, and most of the time the calls relate to my account as an eBay power seller. Typically they are calling me to remind me of some kind of listing specials, or some other thing to get me to be more "active" (AKA: "please do something that will help us make more money").

These calls may be annoying or invasive, but they are NOT a fraud.

It is not a "scam". I am a high volume eBay seller with two stores on the site. It is a legitimate call from their call center in Utah. Sometimes it is my rep calling, other times it is a "scripted" person calling to try to help me "maximize my sales, etc." While it might be annoying, and often times ridiculous, it is legit.
