    Call from a Jason O Connor - message left with a student, " The police would come and arrest me if I did not call back immediately regarding a bill I did not pay" .  I believe the student no reason to lie, the collector needs to know the law and the law suit that is going to be brought to them for harassing me for an false bill

    You can try for a lawsuit, but this scam is run by criminals in India.
    There's nothing that they can do, ignore the calls.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    I got a call a few months back from a heavily accented guy I've nicknamed "Habib" at work saying they were attorney's and that I'm to call another number immediately because of "illegal" activity I've been part of. I went off on him and then called the other number and the same guy answered the phone but this time as an attorney. I laughed at him and we got in an argument with him calling me the N word over and over. He hung up and I called him back. He hung up and I called him back. I must have done this for better part of half a day and never heard back from them until just now being they left a message at my work saying I've broken the law and to call them back now or face the consequences. I've called them back and they knew me immediately because he went on calling me the N word immediately and cussing me out. I cussed him out and he eventually hung up. I called him and he hung up. We continued this until he said calling me was a mistake and threw in one more N comment. I told him not to call me again and hung up.

    The best solution I've found is to call them incessantly. If they call your work a lot the lie that their attorney's becomes obvious. Also the more time you hog up their line, the less time they have to harass others. Now when I call they hang up immediately, won't even speak to me. If they call my work again I'm setting up an autodialer and doing a DOS attack on the numbers I get for them.

    Calls numerous times.  Left voicemails on my phone.  Called my employer.  He was belligerent and barely spoke english.  When I asked him for specific information he was not able to supply it.  The thing that bothers me is that he/they have my ss number.  Threatened me with jail if I didn't pay then in full.  I have already made arrangements to make payments with another agency and dealt with someone who I was comfortable with.  Not sure what to do with this.  Ignore or be worried?

    I've tracked the number their calling from being 818-408-8912 back to a phone company called 01 Communications who was bought out by Pacific Communications in California. I called Pacific and first they said it wasn't a number they owned. They then gave me a number to call for 01 Communications that went right back to Pacific Com. They then realized they did own it but said that they show no customer using that number. Either their record keeping sucks or the numbers been hijacked. You can call 888-444-1111 and just press a number to get someone as they don't have a normal operator extension to dial to complain. They didn't seem to realize any of this was happening or at least indicated this. They said they would have a supervisor call me but as of yet I've heard nothing (it's been 2 days) so I'm going to call them again tomorrow. The only reason to worry here is that the guy doing the calling doesn't care if you know it's a scam, he basically will blackmail you to pay up or he'll keep bugging your work saying your a criminal. If the U.S. based phone companies aren't tracking their hijacked numbers and at least don't disconnect them after being notified they've been hijacked or are used for illegal activity, then they can be held liable. Unfortunately the tool in India is scott free and knows it.

    Jimmie - More info
    Fake attorney Alex Watson, David Smith or whatever other name he's providing buys your personal information from online loan companies that resell your information after you apply for online loans (at least that's one source). He then acts like an attorney calling your work acting like your a criminal and after you call him, he threatens harassment until you pay. This is extortion. The number I have is 818-408-8912 for him (I'm sure there's more) and it's owned by Pacific Communications out of California. Their number is 888-444-1111 (seriously) and if you call them to notify them as I have they claim that number is not in use. I tell them to call it and they'll be cussed out and blackmailed as I was. Either the numbers beeing hosted by them or it's been hijacked. They claim to be researching the issue. note: Pacific may at first try telling you it's not their number but it is.

    I received a call from this number today.  They left a message on my phone about how I committed a criminal offense and needed to call them right away.  Ths is not the first time, everytime I get this type of call I tell them they need to provide me with the loan agreement that I signed stating I would pay back X amount of dollars X amount of time.  I then got an attitude from the person, indian accent, abotut how they are going to come arrest me and rape me at the address they have on file for me.  I then told him that this is not rofessional and what type of call is this.  He kept calling me a criminal and I am a bad person.and I would be arrested and placed in jail for 4 days.  I don't know what type of people these are.  They need to be arrested and jailed, for harrassing honest , hard working people.

    I just got a phone call today from this number at my work which I did not answer due to I didn't know the number so they hung up and called my cell phone and again I did not answer due to I didn't know the number so they hung up again and called my work number again and I didn't answer so they left me a voice mail saying that either myself or my attorney needed to call this number right away and that if they didn't heard back from one of us today than I would be arrested on Monday and put in jail for 6 months.  Something about a pay day loan that was never paid back.  Which I know this is bull because I only had one pay day loan in my life and I paid it back with paperwork to prove it.  The man was a foreigner you could tell from his voice, it was deep and rough sounding.
