Whenever someone tells you that they are a "lawyer" or that they work for a lawyer or law firm, the first question you should ask is what state(s) they are registered in and their BAR number for that/those state(s).  Then go to that state and check them out, contact them directly using the information in the state registration, as these crooks have been known to research real law firm names and attorney names and impersonate them.

The fake process server/location finder extortion SCAM usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation.  It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I was first contacted by a "Process Server for the State of Michigan", of which they had a Michigan area code. Seemed legit at first, and quite concerning. Server left a voicemail, 833-723-1514 was the number to call, and they provided a case number. I called 833-723-1514, got a voicemail, called again, a gentleman named Robert Norton answered, sounds like I woke him up.
Prior to calling, I looked up the legal firm Allen & Edwards. First red flag, address is in NC. Second red flag, bottom right corner: "Powered by GoDaddy Website Builder".
I also looked up the address, 3525 Whitehall Park Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina 28273. Also seemed legit. Googled it, found a directory of businesses that occupy that particular building, no Allen & Edwards found.
When I called Robert Norton, he claimed I took out a loan with a Timelypayday.com, which I had never heard of.
Robert stated I had a settlement amount of $750, or I could go to court.
Me- "What court? Your address is a North Carolina address, are you saying you are licensed to practice in Michigan?"
Robert - "NO! We contract the case someone in Michigan."
Me- "How do you do that? What law firm are you using?"
Robert - "I DON'T KNOW, we do it online in a queue."
Me- "Like a website for contracting law firms? What is the name of the website?"
Robert - "I DON'T KNOW! ARE YOU PAYING OR NOT? YOU ARE GOING TO COURT IF YOU DON'T!"
Me- "Guess we go to court, because all signs point to this being complete and total bullsh*t!"
    Robert hangs up.
I call back, goes to voicemail.
I call again, goes to voicemail, I leave one.

I generally don't use 800notes for anything other than looking up numbers, but this guy is begging to be outed, and if I can help one person not get scammed, I'll be happy.

Remember, you have every right to ask them to prove you owe. Like Big A said a few posts earlier, do the research!

Website went up 1/11/22 and is set to expire next year.  I would be willing to bet that the address they gave is a virtual office.

They left a voicemail stating they were state of KS processing dept and they were calling about a notice of claims that was set to be filed by the law office of Allen and Edwards on 4/28/22 (tomorrow) and by law I had up until filing to settle out of court or papers would be served at (gave my home address). Then left 1-833-723-1514 as a call back number with a reference id #. I always google these type of calls to see if it has been reported as a scam......looks identical to other complaints so not calling them. Googled the law firm-just set up web page 2022 so pretty sure that is not legit either.

I also called the NC Bar and they show no law firm with that name registered with Attorney General. Plus, that building is broken up into suites and they do not list one on their website with the "address".

I recieved a call from a processer yesterday saying they were going to serve me papers today.  The scary thing is he knew the last 4 of my SSN.  I always look up these numbers and people because I have been scamed before.  Then I found this site and everything that has been going on is exactly the same.  I was to call 833-723-1514.  I did and left a message.  Robert Norton called me back and left another message sounding angry that I didn't answer.  I knew it must be a scam.  Thank you to all of you for reporting this.  Saved me a lot of problems.

I received a call that a lawsuit would be filed against me here in my county by June 21 which was yesterday. I was told to call Allen and Edwards to settle it. I didn’t call. Now on June 22, I received a call that Robert Norton needs me to call back or they will file a lawsuit by Friday, June 24. I am 100% on top of my debt and I know I have nothing outstanding. This is a scam for sure. Do not call Allen Edwards or Robert Norton or anyone pretending to be from your state. No one Will ever call you from your state to help you with a lawsuit! I’m in Ohio and the first call came in with a 216 area code which is my area code. the second call has the Allen and Edward’s number which was referenced in the first phone call by someone supposedly from the state of Ohio. What a joke!

SCAM! Michelle contacted a family member to have me call Allen and Edward bc I was being sued! When I called no answer and I left a vm. Robert called me back. At first he was talking fine once I started asking questions he kept saying he can’t say who is suing me only that better finance contracted them to settle it. I called “Better Finance” who is a debt relief showing no records they even stated it’s a scam that they don’t work with third parties. I called back and he kept saying good luck your getting sued LOL yea okay! Don’t give them any info!! I almost did but was glad I googled the number and asked questions. Each question I asked he got more irritated. How are you going to sue someone and not state at least what for! He said it could be from a payday loan or Victoria Secret…. SCAM
