Called my fiancé, my mom and me telling me I owed some crazy amount of money to this "client", which they would not disclose who, for a payday loan that I never took out. I reconciled my bank account and saw what they were requesting did not ever exist. Reported fraud to my credit bureau.

So what can one do about reporting the incident and what measures should one take to protect themselves when a call such as this comes through. It's clear your name is in their hands and they are attempting to run a scam on you, but is ignoring it all you can do to stop the attempts? Numerous numbers including my friends own number contacted her over the course of a week or two and when she finally answered and asked who was calling it became quickly apparent what the situation was and she gave nothing but a first name when she answered the phone from the 844 number she was unfamiliar with. What kind of consequence could come from that to your knowledge?

I as everyone else have been receiving calls even family members from this so called company.  I asked them for documentation.  The lady said they had it.  I told her to send it to me via USPS, her reply was, "We don't have to".  Then I told her, "Under the FDCP section 809 it says you do."  I was hung up on.  That P****D me off so I filed a complaint with CFPB.  Today I receive an email from CFPB stating,

Thank you for contacting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We reviewed your complaint and couldn’t send it to the company for a response. This could be because the company is not yet registered to respond to complaints or because we do not currently handle complaints related to this matter.

    What happens now?
We entered the information you provided into the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database operated by the Federal Trade Commission. Civil and criminal law enforcement authorities worldwide, including Consumer Financial Protection Bureau investigators, use the Consumer Sentinel Network to identify questionable business practices that may lead to investigations and prosecutions.

Can I hire my own lawyer to look into my complaint?
Yes. While we can’t give legal advice or represent individuals in legal matters, if you want more help you can contact a private attorney or your local legal aid office for free or low-cost legal resources at www.lsc.gov.

    Is that it?
Not by a long shot. Complaints help us identify trends and problems in the marketplace and understand the challenges people are facing so we can do a better job looking for these problems when we supervise companies, enforce Federal consumer financial laws and write rules and regulations.

Hearing from consumers like you is critical to our mission. Thank you again for contacting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If you need assistance with another consumer finance issue in the future, contact us

I have Googled this Stark Recovery (Not to be mistaken with Stark Collection Agency) and every site I have been to is pretty much the same as what everyone else on here says.
File a complaint with CFPB and let stop these criminals!

I worked for them for maybe a couple of months. They are nothing but a huge scam!! I'm so glad I got another job. Total scam. Do not give them any of your money. Just tell them that you will see them in court. They aren't actually going to sue they will just move your file to "Collections" where it will just sit there until it moves itself out of the system....trust me I've worked there and have done it

I just received a call from Stark Recovery. Claiming that I took out a loan in 08/2013 and i owed $300, but now $400.00 with charges. She informed me that a class action law suit to the highest degree by law was going to be taken against me if I didn't make a payment and setup a payment plan. When I told her I had no information or heard of the debt company that was claiming this case she informed me that they emailed me and read off my email address. That it was my fault I didn't get the right info and follow up. She had my social and everything. She told me that if I didn't make a payment arrangement today the case was going to be sent on.  They called me from a 866 number.

Is this a scam? I've read the other stories on there from other people like me and it sounds very familiar. I told the agent that called me I was on google and saw other cases like what she was describing and "she said I'm just doing my job and I understand why you feel the way you do) Very scary to be honest when a call comes in like this.

I told her that I didn't get anything in the mail either.
She said she would call me back at 3pm to see about a payment.

Read CWG40's post above.  Obviously this person has no idea what a "class action lawsuit" means, and has fabricated in their feeble little criminal mind the :highest degree".  in an attempt to extort money from you.  A class action lawsuit is where many people who are wronged join together to sue someone, as in a class action lawsuit against a tobacco company.  In that case, the "class" is everyone who smoked, became addicted, and became ill from it.
    Now read the following:
This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

    Stark Attack!

Call blocker might be of some help.  Also don't pick up on numbers you do not recognize, or where there are caller IDs that seem odd.  Or where there is no caller ID.

    Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection  (Threatening criminal prosecution to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them.
