    Received a call from 844-533-0533 regarding a legal problem under Case # DA20791.  The "SCHMUCK" has previously operated under 844-533-0433.  However, scamming "SCHMUCKS" are immediately identified when they ask for the bogus  name our number is "listed" as.  It is perfectly legal to list your phone number under a name other than your real name.  Since the phone companies and our government WON'T protect us from these "SCHMUCKS", we must take matters into our own hands.  Just be sure to monitor your phone bill, because somewhere along the line, the phone companies TRY to bill you as unlisted.  You're not unlisted, the number IS LISTED, just TITLED DIFFERENTLY.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I received a voice mail from 844-533-0533 from Veronica, who was looking for my 26-year old son who has not lived with me in 7 years.  He has never been associated with my current cell number that I have had for only 3 years.  She left a case number and stated that she had received a "complaint" and if he does not return the call, then the agency could make a decision without him.

    I called the number at 8:30 pm PST and could not quite make out the business name.  I thought it said Amerrill Apposition Partners but nothing close to that came up in internet search.  I searched Better Business Bureau for the name and phone number and found nothing.

    A friend of mine called me earlier today reciting the same exact message left on her machine regarding my 26 year old brother. If any of the other responses on this page are any indication, I believe it to be a scam. I hope that you find out the truth, Sally. I may ask a relative of mine who is a private investigator to look into it. He does top notch work, really great. I think his friends gave him the nickname "Magum," though that could also reference his extraordinary moustache. Regardless, if I find any further information, I will post it here.

    Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
    December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

    — filed under: Press Release

    The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

    According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

    The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

    Do not entertain call like that especially from the number mentioned above. I moved to this new place 2 weeks ago and I  got a call from this 844 number. My landlord told me that I need to call them back on this 844 number. I also have some case number. It's a scam no matter how they treat you over phone. Threat them back that if you stay on hold with me for a minute I need to call my local police station.  I'm sure they will hang up on you

    They called two of my brobrothers , my exam sister in law and her parents house all leaving the same message. it has my mom freaked out I'm in some kind of legal trouble.  Even after showing her the response from this page.  I doubt she will believe it is a scam since they made it seem so legal.  They stated the same gave a claim number and said a decision would be made without my consent.

    I received the same call on my cell phone, which came in unlisted so I didn't answer it. It was for my son-in-law, who has never had the use of my phone and the message was exactly the same as above. He talked so fast I can't make out the company name, but the phone number and claim number were clear enough.

    Although I didn't receive a call from this 844 number, this was the call back number that was left on a message intended for my ex-husband stating a case #. I did call back and had a name, but the person that answered said they would take me off their calling list since I have not had any contact with my ex-husband since our divorce. The number that showed when they called was one that was semi-local and that's how I know it's them. Didn't know if this was a scam or if my ex was really in some kind of trouble and they were trying to find anyone that might know his whereabouts since that's a possibility too. After reading these reports, I will block the number and not heed any further calls.
