I received a similar call from this same number today.  When I called back I spoke to a man that didn't identify himself or the company that he was representing.  He claimed I owed money to a pay day loan company that I had never heard of or borrowed from.  He claimed the amount was $580 and for me to take care of it today so that I wouldn't have to do any jail time over the holidays. I told him I wasn't going to send any money unless I had documentation that the debt was mine.  He then said he was sending the paperwork out today and there were two felony charges against me for check fraud.  He had a lit of personal info, social, past and present home address and bank acct info.  I told him I would have to call back and I hung up.  He called me right back and accused me of hanging up in his face and that I must want to face a judge.  He said his name was David.

    Now what?

Received a voice message from a Sondra Waters or Williams, saying about a fax delivery. Called the number back and the woman I spoke to said I wrote a bad check on a Bank of America account, saying I was attempting to defraud her client. Was very ruse when I told her this was incorrect information and that they were scam artists. She said do what you want to do. I hung up.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

This is a scam. They get your information because if you have EVER had an pay day loan of any sorts they buy your personal information from loans stores that do in fact sell it on the internet etc... so when they call you, you think it is legit. There crooks!! They use phone numbers you can't trace and harass you none stop. Almost always this crap starts up more and more before the holidays like Christmas.

This is (one of many) criminal extortion scams that have been going on for years. Many are operating overseas and out of the reach of US law enforcement, while others are operating within the confines of prison cells here in the US, using contraband cell phones. Others are using VOIP. Either way, they are able to disguise their identities and locations, making them next to impossible to prosecute. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting victims' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

This number called saying I was being sued for not paying a payday loan and said I could pay $760 now to settle out of court.  They used a time line in which I had used a pay day loan but I had paid them all off.  She tried her hardest to convince me that I didn't have evidence to prove I had paid my loans off.  I said I would go to court and she hung up.

This number called me, I answered, and it was a recorded message saying to call back the number that just called me, they repeated the number.  Ms Williams was the name.  Said I took out a payday loan in 2008 and that it was through Alliance.  I advised I did not, and she continued on verifying an old address and the last four of my social, and said that criminal charges for fraud were inevitable, that the company no longer wanted their money.  I've been a licensed collector for many years in the past, so I knew how to de-bunk.  I advised that it was a civil matter, not criminal, and that they were in direct violation of the FDCPA by threatening action they did not or could not take, along with numerous other infractions.  Now, I just call them a few times a day and mess with them for fun.  I attempted to file a report with the attorney general's office here in ND, they refused to be of any assistance.  Doesn't seem right that our gov't can put laws in place to protect consumers, but will not stand up and defend us when it's obviously a scam.  I feel for the elderly who fall victim.  They get your info from "zombie" lists, sold all the time.  If you've ever even applied for a payday loan, or a title loan, or various other types of loans, you're at risk.  They request only western union or similar payments, because they can't be reversed.  I wish I could educate each individual in the world and put these guys out of business, seeing as our gov't apparently won't help.
