I have been receiving calls from a John Carson who has also identified himself as John Carlson. He has called my children and my sister stating " two complaints had been filed in Woodward Oklahoma against me (would not give what the complaints were. This man hung up on me when I questioned him about the complaints and asked if this had to do with a online loans. He hung up immediately, after I refused to give him the last 4 numbers of my Social Security number. If cases have been filed in Oklahoma my SS number would be on the files. I have not received any paper work of any type. They have called using 3 different numbers using NY numbers and other non-traceable numbers, 315-498-1818, 844-874-2593 and 866-404-7157. Three different company names  United National Arbitration, Northeastern Consulting Group and International Arbitration.

Same story as TL Mosier stated above, only now the caller's name is Rick McCoy & charges are being filed in NV. According to my Attorney this is a SCAM call! DO NOT give any information out- they use public records available online to look up your family & friends, even place of employment! They'll call anyone they can leaving the same message.

These people called me saying I owed a payday loan. I told him to put anything he had to say to me in writing and I would address it then and hung up. He called back 8 times within 4 minutes and when I told him he was harassing me and that was illegal, he finally stopped.

    >>> This is not a valid area code or number. <<<

Without commenting on the source or nature of calls from this particular number, "area code" 844 is a perfectly valid toll-free non-geographic code just like 800, 888, 877, 866, and 855.  There is also nothing about the seven digits following the 844 in this particular number that makes it intrinsically invalid.  The number might be spoofed and coming from a scammer, but it's not intrinsically invalid.  If you called the number back (which I do NOT recommend) and received an announcement to the effect that "this number is not in service," then most likely, the number is unassigned and is being spoofed.  But that doesn't make the number itself invalid.

So stop spreading misinformation about "invalid" area codes and numbers.

What makes you think that?  It was my impression that SSNs were rarely, if ever, given in any complaint, nor are they used to identify or serve any party or witness in a lawsuit.

The same might NOT be true in India.  See, for example:

A person named Marie Davis contacts my biological father who've I barely know in my 43 years to tell him I'm in trouble and have a day to contact her or a warrant will be put out for my arrest for a bounced check. I don't have any. Furthermore he's not able to do anything but call other family members to find me and have this message delivered. It's [***] how these bill collection agencies used public records to threaten fake claims. Something has to be done to stop these vultures.

Got calls yesterday and today from the number. He identified himself as Rick McCoy. Regarding my brother-in-law, whom I hardly know. He left a voicemail yesterday. I called back and spoke with him, curious about how he obtained my name and number. I ask questions. I am a communicator by profession - I know a blockhead when I meet one. How about we solve this one the old-fashioned way? I believe in the power of people pulling together - why don't we all ring his phone off the hook? All hours of the day and night? Anyone who owns a phone can help make a huge difference. He will either get another number, which will eventually ring off the hook as well, or he will go and earn an honest buck like the rest of us. :-)

I have received 2 phone messages, on Sept. 18 and Sept. 22, both from "Rick McCoy", requesting that I call back or have my attorney contact him concerning my association and culpability in a criminal case (gave the case #) against a defendant named Wiley Wolf that I allegedly am somehow associated with (I do not know a "Wiley Wolf").    This appears to obviously be an attempt to scare the elderly for the purpose of obtaining personal information.  I will not call back, but would like to report  this attempted scam to the general public.

Don't get your knickers in a ruffle.  In this case, and for this person at this time, its use is invalid.  Go get a real life, and save the lectures for the classroom.

They've also called my work and told them the police were coming for me.  When I called back and asked if they new some of the other names they used, they said yes.  They said" I suppose you are reading those names on the internet.  Well, people who are being called to pay back a debt don't usually have nice things to say".  Also told me that they had a client who was pregnant, unemployed and her husband left her.  Said they wouldn't go after someone like her.  But, I on the other hand, have a descent job" so we're coming after you".  They are very threatening.  If anyone knows what to do to get them to stop short of giving them what they want, please let me know.  It's very embarassing to have them call you boss and say the police are coming after you.  Please help!

I'm sure Nonie's knickers are wrinkle-free. It is correct that the area code is valid. I'm also reading that combined with the exchange, the number falls outside the North American Numbering Plan. But all this buries the lead, which should be about a bunch of thugs using stories of unpaid debt as a cheap excuse to run a shakedown racket. Merely yelping "it's a scam" based only on a phone number's NANPA street cred, however dubious, is weak sauce anywhere.

Scam hurting???  Why else would you attack a respected member of 800notes?  Nonie should get a life--What are you smoking???  I am sure Nonie's life is 1000% better than yours, loser.

We are ever so happy that UNA/NECG has produced another Satisfied Victim. I know the first thing I do when I pay a bill is to come running to 800Notes, a site devoted to mysterious callers, and post my praising testimonials under the phone numbers used by my creditors and collectors, who by then are not at all a mystery to me.

Paying a stranger on the phone does not equal having "paid it back" where unverified and possibly phantom or invalid debts are concerned. If you don't like the term "scumbags" as applied to hostile thugs who use terror and lies to score a payday, maybe you could select an alternate: "blackguard", "criminal", "felon", "fraud", "jailbird", "knave", "miscreant", "reprobate", "scofflaw", "scoundrel", "thief", "villain"
