Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - Mrs. Hager| 1 replyI just received an email stating exactly what Ms. Amy Gibson stated above. They say I have 4 hours to contact them. Though I have taken out a few pay loans, I have ALWAYS paid them in full. I had this happen to me about 6 months ago. In a panic, to avoid any problems, even though I knew I didn't have any outstanding loans, I paid but never go any release paperwork as they said I would so I then knew for sure I was taken. This email says the county sheriff will be coming to my house and serve me if I don't comply. I only have the person's name that sent me the email. He didn't give his company name.

- CWG40 replies to Amy Gibson| 1 replyJefferson and Associates Law Firm. No such law firm that I can find. Possible Indian-based scam.
Also, there's a Todd Jefferson who is sending out e-mails around claiming to represent the state of California and threatening people with arrest over nonpayment of payday loans. His callback is: (818) 396-1661
E-mails a dead giveaway for an Indian-based scam. The same stupid stock phrases of someone who can't speak or write English.
Total scam.
Beware and take care. - CWG40 replies to Mrs. HagerTotal scam. Ignore. Never give money or information to anyone over the phone, or by e-mail. These are Indian-based scammers!
Report them: http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx - CWG40 replies to dee
- CWG40 replies to KendraBlock their calls. They may try to contact your employer which can be a problem. See if you can get your employer to install a blocking device.
- CWG40These scammers are picking their victims like predators. They are picking on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community. They think women are more vulnerable to their scams.
If anyone with an Indian accent calls you and (1) offers you something or (2) threatens you, hang up. It is most likely a scam.
Nothing against Indians or people from surrounding countries; that's just the way it is now.
Everyone please read Tamianth's notes!- Caller: Informational post
- May| 1 replyThis scammer must be investigated & thrown into jail. I am not going to believe this Indian voice to have a white name such as Todd Jefferson. He claimed to be an attorney saying that I had 4 hours to respond. When I called asking him how he got all this information he hung up on me. I tried calling and calling but kept getting hanged up on. I really don't know how he got SS# & other info. But Never pay!!!! Always APPEAL or Investigate!!!

- Kay replies to TJ| 1 replyI just got an email saying the very same thing only having 4 hours and from Richard Boyce and for the same amount of money
- DeLancey replies to KayI received the same email. I'm not going to lie, it scared me. However, this made me believe it was a scam. Thank y'all. I will be handling this with a good old fashioned come to Jesus with this Richard Boyce.
- AMS replies to TJI got this same email. Called and he was SOOO unprofessional for an "attorney"! You will be waiting a long time for law enforcement to show up.....I never heard of anyone getting arrested for not paying a loan on time! And if going to court, it would take months if not years to complete. Definitely keep filing complaints! You are so right about the wording....haaaaa what a joke but they are scaring innocent people which is a form of terrorism which makes me sick!
