- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Larry B| 4 repliesWas just browsing Overstock.com when Red Alert White Text popped up, suggesting there had been an attempt to steal my personal info, but blocked by firewall. I should lock my accounts and call this number. All my Chrome browser windows were frozen, so started Internet Explorer to search number & post this. After about a minute, the Chrome browser windows were working again.

- GinaWas on Google Chrome when my screen froze and a red screen popped up along with a number 855-247-2962 and that I needed to call as someone was trying to steal my banking information. I have contacted Google which will be a 30 minute wait. Ran anti-virus and I am using internet explorer. When I rebooted my computer the screen came back. So I am running anti virus just in case. I am sick and tired of this!

- oldbutnotdumb| 1 replyI get this all the time, with different numbers to call. It is a SCAM. Those of you with trouble getting rid of it - first don't click on the pop-up. Second have you tried just turning your computer off using the off button on the keyboard? That works for me. There are also lots of websites (be careful) that describe other ways to work around this terrible and prolific scam once you get the "error" message, which in itself IS the error.
- Caller: Scam pretending to be Microsoft
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- izzabelBought a brand new Dell computer from Costco. Opened box, set it up as instructed, plugged it in and ran the recommended Windows updates as instructed. Updates finished and computer was frozen so I restarted it. It rebooted and a red screen popped up warning that all devices on my network were infected and to call this number.

- GodzillaSame experience > ctrl-alt-delete - restart & google - to here
- Tara replies to mkI hope you didn't call the number. The message wasn't from Google. It's a phishing attempt to get you to give them access to your computer. The "error message" was laden with grammatical issues.
- CalGot this number from a screen popup on my computer. It's the Microsoft tech support ransomware scam. They tell you you have a virus. You don't. A web page you visited does. You call the number and someone from Mumbai or New Delhi answers claiming to be Microsoft Technical Support. They aren't. They're scammers. They tell you to go to a website to install third-party software so they can check your system. MS would never do this. They would use the utility built into Windows. Once they have access to your system they use the syskey utility to encrypt your computer making it useless. Then they blackmail you for hundreds of dollars in ransom to get the four-digit password.
- Caller: Ransomeware scam
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Denise B replies to Larry BSame thing with overstock.com
- Mike TI also had this pop-up appear after visiting Outlook.com. It did not look credible, but I'm glad others reported their experience here to confirm. I killed the Google Chrome process with task manager and chose not to restore pages when I restarted, which seems to have worked.
- Caller: N/A
- Tim C| 1 replyPop-up from a Zillow.com page. Total scam. Killed Google from task manager, ran malwarebytes and killed a couple of malware issues. We will see if it comes back.
- PJG replies to oldbutnotdumbI too received this message, rebooted and it came back. I ended Chrome through task manager and ran virus protection.
- KKBWalmart website same issue! Ransomware attack
- Caller: 855-247-2962
- Tired of this| 1 replyThis is the second time I have tried to fill in this box. The first try just disappeared. The red "google chrome" trojan warning came along with a PHONE CALL msg from MICROSOFT telling me urgently to call the number they gave me, which I am going to investigate also. My last laptop was infected and the sign on magically changed so I have no access. Who are the good guys and how can you tell them from the scammers
