How do you know that they are "legitimate debt collection company"?  I see lots of names in this thread, many offered before you got to page 5.  So, why did you settle for that post to both believe and to answer?

I did not state they were a legitimate debt collection company, In my first sentence I wrote they are NOT a legitimate company who is calling via 855.491.4786. I responded to another person who stated they were legitimate and provided the company name. There were other posts who provided the same name so I looked up the Debt Collection Company under that name and called them and they stated they were not associated with the number nor would they call people using these tactics. I then looked up the company via the CFPB and the name of the company is a real debt collection company but they are not the people calling from this number. So whomever is calling people from masked numbers and asking them to call 855.491.4786 should not call the number back and report them to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. My Attorney said the more people that report these calls, the more we can stop these fraudulent calls.

I called ERS Recoveries which is Express Recovery Services. They are a legitimate debt collection company
So, you are saying that those are not your words?  It sure sounds like you are claiming that they are a legitimate debt collection company to me.

So, let's see.  Up until page 5 I have ERC & ARS on page 1
on page 2 I have an ERF.  On page 3 we have and ERS.  On page 4 we have an ERS, on page 5 we have the post you replied to, and also a recovery services.  Now, also keep in mind that ERS could stand for anything.  Since it does not appear that you read past page 5 there is no reason to go any further.

ERC is Enhanced Recovery Corp.,  ARS is well known to be a debt scammer but those initials are used by several different debt collectors as well.

BigA this is my last response as I am not going to get into a back and forth. I just put out the information that the CFPB and my Attorney told me to share to help others be vigilante. I looked up ERS and via the CFPB the business with that name is a Legitimate Debt Collection Company. But as I stated, if the people who are calling from 855.491.4786 state they are ERS Recoveries they are not from that company. They are most likely using the names of real Debt Collection Companies such as ERS or another name to try and scam people. I called ERS to make sure they were not calling with that number and they confirmed they were not. That is all I was trying to state.  I assumed that when some people stated ERS and some people stated ARS, it was the same via how the person pronounced the name but all in all, there is a Real Company names ERS Recovery which is a Debt Collection Company that is a legal entity in Salt Lake City. The people calling from 855.491.4786 are not from ERS and there is no other ERS or ARS Debt Collection Company I can find filed with the CFPB. If you have any further questions about this, please read through the NOLO website or the CFPB website I shared above which has solid guidelines for these calls. Thank You.

I take little away from your cautionary statements, but let's press the rewind button a moment. The term "legitimate" gets tossed around often here and it's become misshapen. The very first meaning in every dictionary says something akin to "legally compliant". Meantime the wall-to-wall complaints in this thread indicate anything but that best behavior from the subject company.

What puzzles me is your reliance upon the word of an unfamiliar debt collector to reach that conclusion of "legitimate". What metric do you apply to honesty, a sincere rep's voice acting properly aghast? When you find a dead hen near the coop you don't ask the coyote ten feet away for a confession.

In almost twenty years of studying this industry I have found consistently that there is almost no such thing as too much skepticism. Your early evening rebuttal was spent on "Aacuna", a common example of a pestilent breed we know as a company "shill". The shill has the same mission as the Slick Willie at Express you rang up in your investigation, to paint their operation as saintly and pure, even if it takes risible distraction and outright lies to convince you. This is not the first time I've seen the "wasn't us" toss-off in illegal payday loan collection. Another common ruse is claiming that the victim "paid the wrong collector" before but still owes to the current "legitimate" collector. See, there's that term getting warped again.

But in fairness let's suppose this thread's "Express" is some doppelganger's victim. Documented here we have eleven whole months of sadly typical abuse tactics heaped upon alleged debtors and their "nearbys". I would expect that by now the "real" debt collector's CEO would snap a pencil between clenched fingers and declare war on the posers. This is pretty straight-ahead trademark smearing. Shouldn't the nice man on your nice phone call have some inkling of who's trashing his company's sterling reputation?

BigA is surely familiar with the work done by Nolo Press, the FTC, and the CFPB, as am I with those and also the EFF, NCLC, PIRG, Public Citizen, and a bunch of scholarly consumer lawyers. I'm not familiar with any CFPB service which vets debt collection agencies upon request in the manner you suggest. I am also unaware of when the CFPB became "a division of the FTC" per your assertion ... especially now that the Bureau is about to join its own enemies in trying to convince SCotUS that it's "structurally unconstitutional". I would politely suggest that more homework is needed at your end.

I've tried to duplicate your CFPB vetting and didn't get far. I did see there's an Express Recovery Services, Inc. in Utah which has been named a defendant and lost enough times to make me wonder if it's the same as your ERS. If nothing else, we might aim a stronger light into what is currently an inconclusive salad bowl of facts and not assume that every bite is fresh and clean.

Same as everyone else.   I've gotten these calls for maybe 3 years now, they go away for a while and then start up again.  They always call from a local number and then say to call the 855 number, which I believe is in Canada.

I received a call from a local number but message that was left on my voice mail was "To provide your statement of consent we would always prefer to work with you in securing final closure regarding your unresolved obligation please contact our office upon receipt of this message at 855-491-4786 to avoid a final decision being made without your input" Scam

DO NOT return these calls. I called them back from an office phone rather than the number they called. You get someone who claims to be a "locating agent" for multiple companies, and you have to GIVE THEM your identifying info so they know who to connect you with. DEFINITELY  a scam line.
