Have had several calls from another phone number saying I have a claim against me.  They give me a claim # and tell me to call 866-217-0251. I called from another phone and they answered as Davidson Edwards. They immediately asked for my claim #. I said that I misplaced it. I was not giving my name out. They said I have a commercial or personal complaint against me.  Today, just got another call from the exact same number. Phone was dead, so it went directly to voicemail. It said that I have a package that was undeliverable and I need to call them to confirm the delivery address.

This is a legitimate debt collector, Davis and Edwards. I was the anonymous person who wrote. Can't remove the post or edit it.  The package was an envelop they mailed to our physical address where we do not receive mail.

Then you should be able to tell us what was in the alleged "package" and the address of this company.  It is also notable that I cannot find any "legitimate" companies by that name on the internet.

Received a voicemail from this number saying there was a failed attempt to deliver a package. The caller ID on my phone said it was an international call from the China Mainland.

Mike, in my case, that would not make sense. I'm not a super wealthy guy, but I am fortunate to be living a debt free life. :-)

Someone from this company (Davis Edwards) called me to say that I owed a debt for a US Cellular phone bill; I filed a Chapter 7 over fifteen years ago. The caller was very abusive, threatened me with legal action and harassed me. I will be filing a formal complaint under the FDCPA regulation guidelines.

Started receiving calls from a 630 area code number today, after about 3 calls I finally answered, only to be told to contact the above mentioned 866 number regarding a complaint against me. Contacted the 866 number and the woman after receiving the “Case Number” began asking me personal identify information that I refused to give out and would not tell me anything about the reason for the calls. There is no knowledge of this Davis and Edwards company online, nor can the number be traced to anyone through a search. I would not trust this company.

Recieved a VM that a package was undeliverable. The woman sounded local but no introduction. Even my well known leasing office agent always introduces herself in her voicemail when calling about a package. This is a scam through and through, and whoever Michelle is that posted on this thread likely works for them

So, they send you a 1099-C.  The you pay the tax at your normal rate which is probably around 10% or less.  They can't ever attempt to collect that debt because it is no longer a debt.  Pay attention to that last sentence.  Do you really think that they would give up their ability to collect a debt?  Is that something that would make sense?  How about you make the follow the law?  Wouldn't that be a better thing to do?  Anyone who tries to extort money is a criminal and that is what they are trying to do.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Got the same type of call a thousand times in the last year or  two. Different numbers but last night it was a local # that when I wanted his full name and company he gave a bogus name and said company was Davidson Edwards and gave the same 866 #. I promptly called the number gave them a bogus name and they came back with my name. I believe this is U.S. Cellular (old files)as others have said. I haven't heard from U.S. Cellular since 1996. These r cold calls attempting to steal to your money. U.S. Cellular was one of the first cell phone companies when we all started getting phones in the late 90s. They either went under or were bought out by somebody, because I remember when they disappeared as a carrier. Thank you BigA for all that great information on where we can find out all our rights and their wrongs. A lot of us just don't know where to look to find out such information so I appreciate all that you posted. We all need to report these calls.
