- HeikeThis # was left on my VM and stated it is 1st Financial Legal Dept. I called the # and a recording played.
It stated 1st Financial Legal, if you receive this message, we are either with another client or are closed. Leave the phone # you can be reached at with your case # and we will return your call.
Not sure what to make of this, since I don't bank with them. - DebraAbout 10 minutes ago, I got a call labeled as "Unknown". Why I answered, I don't know but it was from some guy claiming he was a delivery service and had some papers that some firm wanted him to deliver to me on Monday. He made it sound like legal papers. I had no clue what he was talking about and I asked him who the firm was. He wouldn't tell me. He gave me the phone number and a case number. Wouldn't give me his callback number, either. So, I called the "866" number and the person who answered also wouldn't give me a company name...said the building was comprised of law firms, investment firms, etc. He stated they were the answering service or managing service or some such nonsense and that the only way they could route my call was for me to provide the case number. Since I don't have any outstanding debts, I sensed a scam or probably some type of bottom feeder collection agency trying to collect on Balley's Fitness from 20 years ago (yep, they're still trying), so I hung up.
- RCTReceived VM with the same type of info as other posters. They were looking for my son. Within a few minutes my wife, my 2 daughters and my mother-in-law received the same call. Number traces back to US Process Servers.
- Caller: US Process Servers
- anonreceived a voice mail message call from this number telling me that they were calling me about a "Legal Matter" telling me that they were notifying me about "impending legal action" . asked me to cal them back with the case number. again they said "the firm" but didnt give the name of the firm.
- RitaGot a call at work from a call center as well stating they were calling on behalf of a firm and that they have a summons to serve me and I need to call them right away or they will show up at my work place to serve the papers! Is that even legal??? Asked him which firm this is and what it's about and said same thing, that they're a calling service and don't have access to this information and said I need to call the 866 number and give them my case number...same here, I have no legal issues so am confused as to what this could be...glad you I see others had the same kind of calls and that this is possibly a scam.

i was going to use the dropdown below to choose the "call type"... but there was no "amateur" category - Simply Ravishing| 4 repliesMy wife fell for these jerks recently. She got a call from the number threatening to "serve her papers" the next day unless she paid on her account. We do owe money on some Capitol One cards and she got panicked and assumed it was in reference to those accounts. She ended up setting up a payment plan with them as they were willing to "settle" the account for 1/3 of the total balance. She made the first payment, and then received a letter from First Financial Partners in the mail shortly after. The letter lists a bogus credit card as the debt owed from First Savings Credit Card, something neither of us have ever opened and doesn't show up on our credit report.
We just realized this tonight. I've cancelled the debit card she gave them, so that no additional funds can be taken... but I'm not sure what to do next... the contact person listed on the letter is Curtis Evans, Director of Operations...

- regfdgsdfg replies to Simply RavishingMaybe contact your local law enforcement and file a report of the fraud/extortion that occurred.
Contact your financial institution and reverse charges. - BigA replies to Simply RavishingThis is why you never pay a debt unless it is validated first.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- Leslie| 4 repliesI got a Voicemail that said this was in regards to my brother, who is developmentally disabled and on SSI and lives in a group home, about a case that was filed against him. I was shocked and told them my brother is developmentally disabled so then they asked me if he got served. I told them I represent him and who was suing him? so they put me on hold and then I hung up. I went online to do research and found this site. I am going to assume this is a scam. Does anyone have any further actions or advice on this situation??

- Alfalfa replies to Leslie| 1 replyHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - CWG40 replies to Leslie| 1 replyJust because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a DIME until the debt is validated.
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.
If they are bothering you,
Report them:
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/Complaint/#debt-collection
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. - Leslie replies to AlfalfaThank you so much! This was a big help. Have a great day :)

- ArthurSame story, just a different day. I finally reached a Michael Riviera, and asked for the last 4 digits of my social. I said no, and told him that I didn't have time for his scam that I was currently reading about on this website. He was quick to get off the phone.
