- JH| 1 replyCalled today and said I had to call them about a 1099 associated with my taxes and MUST call them back! Not!
- Caller: 8663835418
- Mike-in-MD replies to JHProbably referring to a 1099-C which is issued by a creditor for forgiveness of debt of $600 or more and must be reported as income on your taxes. Once a 1099-C is issued, the debt is considered discharged and can no longer be collected by the original creditor. Some unscrupulous creditors include debt covered by 1099-Cs in packages they sell to third parties who may then try to collect but a 1099-C would render it uncollectable should they try to sue you to collect.

- JamieThese people are literal scavengers. The most likely reason for them calling you is that they have bought really old debt that is either out of the statute of limitations, discharged through bankruptcy or has already been resolved. It is referred to as "zombie debt". First off, NEVER acknowledge the debt. And this is very important, never, ever make any sort of payment to them. They will try to trick you into making a payment, however small it may be, because by doing that it restarts the statute of limitations. Second of all, verbally tell them to "cease and desist" all communications. If they call again, do not answer and then send a certified letter telling them to cease all communications with you. Make sure you keep records of the calls and anything you send them. Also remember their threats of legal action or freezing your assets is complete BS. They are preying on people who do not understand their rights. Do not fall victim to them. Cheers!

- KOLeft same message as above. I blocked my number and called it back. Guy answered and didn't identify company or name. Gave me last four of a SSN and a first name that isn't mine. When I asked him to identify he asked for my last SSN, and when I declined he told me to "shut up". That was when I decided to cuss his ass out and called him every name in the book. Blocked on all of my phone numbers. He said Sage & Associates. I've had nothing from them before. Caller ID didn't identify them.

- JRodI rcvd a call from 1-866-383-5418 and also was left multiple messages. I was told my bank account, taxes and employment would be affected if I did not return the call. Before calling back I looked up the number and found it on this site which immediately raised a red flag. The woman who picked up was very rude from the start and stated I had reached "SRG" The debt she is collecting on is an old debt I actually do owe for a little over $200.00 so I am shocked as too how they obtained my info but their collection tactics are illegal. Although I do owe the debt, it is not to this "debt collector" She would not give me any information as to where they are located, would not agree to send my anything in writing and when I challenged her she told me the sherriff was on his way to my house TODAY. and that I was going to be arrested. Furthermore she stated that if I did not pay $201.24 cents today via credit card I was going to be charged with theft of services and jailed. This is also another illegal practice. You can not be jailed for debt that you have tried to pay but just couldn't keep paying, that does not conclude in theft. How many people would be in jail if this was the case? You can be sued for debt, but you are always first notified by mail by a legit company and you are legally allowed 30 days to dispute the debt or make payment. No company requires you pay right on the spot, or you will go to jail THAT DAY. This place is bogus and they are dangerous because they are acquiring your information and credit reports. BE CAREFUL. SRG IS A SCAM DEBT COLLECTOR - DO NOT PAY THEM DIRECTLY. PULL YOUR CREDIT REPORT BEFORE YOU PAY ANY DEBT COLLECTOR.

- AmusedCalled my work said I had a complaint filed against me and that they were going to deliver papers here to my work. Called back the number they left and told them with a very serious voice that this was the ** Sheriff's Department and that you just called and said you needed to drop off a packed. Woman on the line liked to have pooped on herself and was stumbling with her words and ask me where did they call. I stated again, "you have reached **Sheriff's Department and how can I help you?" She said "no, no we must have called the wrong number." I said "mam, your message clearly stated you have a package to deliver here, so how can I help you." So this time she asked what the number was and I could hear her typing it and she goes "no, no we have the wrong number, we won't bother you anymore." Yep that's right you won't bother me anymore. From now on I'll be scamming the scammer by answering with different Sheriff's offices names.
