I got a call from my ex-husband last week saying that he needs to give me a message with a phone number and extension to call. A man called and represented himself as an officer of the courts in the county I live in. James Ellis was his name and he was going to turn me over to the courts and my license would be suspended and I could possibly being going to jail! He told this to my ex! Said that he had done everything he could to contact me and if I did not get back with him in 3 days that it would then be up to the courts. !!!!!??? He also gave him a document number and didn't specifically tell him what it was in reference to but told him enough to make me look absolutely terrible to my ex. I can't believe they called him to get to me to begin with. We've been divorced for 11 years! I just couldn't believe it! I know its for collection on a pay day loan I received in 2008. But how can they get away with defaming people like this, and falsifying information about me to someone that is not me or directly and closely related to me? I just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone that wanted to look into why they were called from this number. I did some research and it is in fact a debt collection agency called DCS. And they will go through the phone book and call every one with your last name until they make contact with someone that knows you. Heaven forbid that person listen to the crap they have to say.

I am receiving phone calls from this number (866-396-3982) at MY JOB from a man that says his name is Jim Wheeler aka Mr. Wheeler that claims he is an arbitrator for the county I live in and says that he has documents for me to sign and that my license could be suspended if he cannot meet up with me to get them signed. I've received numerous phones calls from him after I have repeatedly told him that I cannot receive personal calls at my job and explained to him that he could deliver these so called documents to my house. At this point I'm feeling harassed and wonder if there is anything that can be done about it?

Received a robo call from this number. Called them back to find out what they want. They asked if I had a case number and I said that thier message only gave me a phone number and ext to call and I had no idea what they where calling about.
Robo call referred to filing some kind of papers with a court and that to avoid that I should call. The person I talked with after calling back asked for my last name and said he had no such name on his list.
I asked who he represented he said that they were an attorney office for the DCFS and they handled fraud claims for bad checks and the like and that maybe the call was sent to a wrong number and I should just ignore the call.

I received a message on my voicemail from some women who made these exact same threats that they have suspended "my" license in Mass.. Funny thing is they are looking for a women named Paula.. My voicemail even says you have reached JENN!!!  So #1 they have violated the law by leaving personal detailed information on my voicemail for some women who used to have our number about 2 years ago (and who we have no idea she is).  We've informed all the bill collecters that have called us that we don't know her and to remove our TN yet they don't.  So guess what they are getting a nasty ol' call from me!!!  I am so sick of these people calling my unlisted/unpublished (that we pay a lot of money for) looking for this women who I don't know!!!  They have screwed with the wrong person!!!!

In response to your comment "flabberghasted, Are you srue this is a debt collector? Even though they are listed as one doesn't mean that is true. Are they registered with the BBB or an accredited business?  Anyone can list their # as a business us some sort. We too have been receiving calls from this person and he says that if we don't help my brother-in-law out that he would end up in jail. In calling the sheriff in the county that my brother-in-law lives in, the sheriff confirmed that there were no cases in their county and that they never heard of this!

These [***] had the brass to call my best friend with some [***] about a flag being placed on my drivers license about some years ago Pay Day Loan. I think these [***] need to do a little research into credit law in the good old USA. You CANNOT divulge personal information about someone to a third party via the telephone, especially when you have no way of verifying who the person is you are divulging that information to. They told my friend that they had a warrant out for my arrest. Bring it on!  Most of these Pay Day Loan companies are offshore entities operating illegally anyway. That's why they hire these quasi "law" firms to harass and threaten people. I don't have any such unpaid loan, and even if I did, screw these [***] for their tactics.  If I could get an address on these jerks I would sue them!

The DCS associates HAVE, in fact, been accredited AND work as a subsidiary to the attorneys who handle fraud with bank accounts and individuals who issue bad checks. They helped me resolve MY bad check just before the Maricopa County authorities petitioned a summons to have me appear in court for this. I contacted the county, & they HAD a court date for me and DCS fortunately were able to retract the paperwork for me FORTUNATELY and it was resolved! I'm thankful, I saved time AND money

I would save yet more time AND money simply by refusing to pay THEIR "hot check" claim which they cannot prove to be valid BECAUSE it's likely false to begin with. There would be no NEED for hostile and illegal collection tactics if they HAD all the proof they NEEDED. There would BE no need to flood this thread WITH shill comments and weirdly STRESS every few WORDS in doing SO.

Fun facts to know and tell:

Diversified Collection Services, "A Performant Company" in California, has been linked before to illegal collection practices, including false threats and aggressive skip tracing under pretense. They've been reported to apply much the same bad tactics to working student debt portfolios, which seem in particular to attract "Buffalo Bully" type collectors. DCS was among the agencies cut loose by the IRS in 2009 when the concept of farming out delinquent tax collection to the private sector more or less imploded.

Jim Ellis, mentioned a couple times in this thread, was one of three aides to our old criminal pal Tom DeLay racked on felony charges of money laundering and conspiring to break election laws a decade ago in Texas. Ellis was then leading DeLay's "Americans for a Republican Majority" PAC.

Diversified Collection Services was a top corporate contributor to Texas Republicans and by extension part of DeLay's scandal. DCS was indicted with seven other corporations for illegal political contributions. By the start of 2005, DCS and Sears, Roebuck "settled" their criminal cases "in exchange for their cooperation in the DeLay investigation".

Do pay your billers if they are deserving and they treat you fairly. Don't pay a third party debt collector unless those first two conditions are true, *and* you're certain of what your money will actually buy.

Uhh, thanks, I read this reply to the OP the first time. I'm counting five serious FDCPA violations in the story from "Flabberghasted", who was never given a chance to "avoid a load of humiliation". It sounds like the Ex was hassled before DCS attempted direct contact with the alleged debtor. The object was to create false shame, since her current phone number was likely already known to DCS. This is standard procedure for the worst collection agents.

Your blather here about shaming people via hearsay and publication is only more of the same bad behavior. "These matters usually will end up" in court with DCS named as "defendant" when you push the wrong people too far. A fat settlement check is all you need to send if you want to avoid public shaming yourself. If you don't want to function lawfully they cannot help you "as the situation unfolds".
