thanks for posting.  The internet is a powerful tool.  After reading this I called the number and they told me I owed them $2,008 plus Attorney FEES.  I told them it seemed that they were using illegal practices for collecting a debt and I should report them to the FTC.  After I said that, the guy on the phone lost all composure and started yelling at me and basically said they could do anything to collect this debt, I told him to stop yelling at me or I'm hanging up..he told me do what I have to do.  Phone call ended.
They originally said I was suppose to be served tomorrow, the second guy said I was suppose to be served sometime this week. (?)

    I will repost anything new.

The validity of your message is more than a little suspect considering that law enforcement officers don't run errands for debt collectors and law firms, and that only a court -- not a debt collector -- issues summonses and subpoenas.

    Just a few fun facts:

    1) A consumer is under no obligation to communicate with a debt collector and can direct the debt collector to cease all communication.  If the debt collector fails to cease communication, then the consumer can sue the debt collector in federal court.

    2) It is against federal law for a debt collector (whether that debt collector is an attorney or not) to make false threats, such as threatening a consumer with a lawsuit when there is no intention of suing; or threatening a consumer with arrest. (The fact is, no debt collector or shyster lawyer has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything.)

    3) It is against federal law for a debt collector to impersonate a law enforcement officers, attorneys and officers of the court.

    4) Consumers who have been falsely threatened by a debt collector can sue the debt collector in federal court under the provisions of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

    5) In addition to filing suit, consumers who have been dealt with in an illegal manner by a debt collector can file complaints with the following federal and state enforcement agencies:

    - The consumer's home state attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

    - The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

    - If the debt collector illegally threatens arrest or falsely claims law enforcement is on the way to serve a summons, file a complaint with the local police department.

    - The FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov (using the telephone, which is a federally-regulated utility, to make false threats in an attempt to extort money may constitute wire fraud.)

    6) There are many websites which offer valuable information and assistance in protecting a consumer from shady debt collectors, including legal help in filing a lawsuit. Here are just few such websites:

    http://www.naca.net/debt-collection-abuse/
    http://www.fairdebtlawyers.com/
    http://www.myfairdebt.com/
    http://attorneysforconsumers.com/
    http://www.westcoastlitigation.com/
    http://www.theadvocateslaw.com/
    http://www.consumercounselgroup.com/
    http://www.budhibbs.com/First.htm
    http://www.creditlawnetwork.com/

ODG, I hope and other consumers find this information helpful.  :)

The person called my mother's house on a line I have never given out to anyone claiming to be from the district attorney's office.  He claimed that I was part of a civil liability case and he needed to serve me.  He left a case number and said I need to call between 8am and noon tomorrow.  I called the number when she gave me the message at 6pm tonight and it was answered "Legal department". I asked what company this was for and was told Asset Management.

This company called my old employer about a month ago asking for me by my maiden name (been married over 5 years and stopped working for the company not long after my wedding). They called me to tell me that these people had called me trying to summon me to court. Didn't think they could give out that kind of information to random people but whatever... When I called them back they told me I owed them over $2000 for a debt from over 7 years ago! He then asked me a bunch of questions about my finances and told me they would settle for about 3 quarters of the debt but I had to pay it then. When I said I didn't have that kind of money he said I would have 3 hours to find it by "any means neccessary" and if I didn't they would take me to court. Called back about 2 hours later and asked for proof sent to me of the debt in the mail and they said no. Called again today at my home number asking for my maiden name again (which I updated a month ago) and when I called back (10:30 est) they answered with a "hello?" No company name or anything. Said he was on his way home and to call back tomorrow. We'll see. This is bogus.

Someone came to my mother's house yesterday and stated they had a package to be delivered.  When my mother opens the door, they asked her if she was me.  She stated no and that I was her daughter and if she knew what time, I was going to be home.  They left and my mother called me immediately.  The next day I went to her house around the same time and they called this time.  She acted as if she did not know any English and I got the called.  I acted like my sister and that I relay any message they wanted.  He stated that there was legal matter against me and that I have been summons against and I need to call 866-441-6224 and game me a case#.  If I did not call the number and arrange some time to get the summons that they will contact the sheriff’s department and that any legal fees I will be responsible for.  That within two days the sheriff’s department will be at my house.  Once I arrived at home the same message was on my answering machine.

When I called the number asked the man the name of the company he said it was Assett Management.  When I inform him that it was a collection agency and that they needed to stop harassing my family.  I also inform him that I will file a report on the company.  He tried to state that they had a legal department.  I told him it was a collection agency and that they will hear from my attorney.  His respond was to hang up on me.

I am glad that I come upon this website.  Thanks everyone for the heads up.

I got the same call, last night, 7pm, 9-2-08.  They asked for my husband. I told them,  I don't believe this is the Sheriff's Dept, their business office is not open at this time of day. So called our local Sheriff, they asked me if I would be willing to call today and get all of the information I could an call them back. When I called at 9am, 9-3-08, got a recording to leave my SS #, yes, like I am stupid enough to do that after I had already found this site, 2 mintues after their phone call. So called again at 2PM, got all the information that I could, got put through to a Peter Line. I asked for the  birthdate of the person they were seeking, I didn't have any idea who it was, but I really "let him have it".  He then said he was going to sue me for being nasty to him. I had told him never ever to call this phone no. again.  I told him, go ahead, and bring it on. I had already talked to the Sheriff about it, and I was ready for a fight. By the way, my husband is suffering with cancer, and is undergoing another surgery on friday.  I am going to call back tonight and talk to the same deputy sheriff.  Give his this same infomation.  Even though they were not looking for my husband, I am out to protect older people who might fall for this trick. And I can tell you, I am ready for a fight, if they call here again.

    I feel soooooo stupid.

Got a call from someone asking if I was going to be home so that he could serve me court documents.  He explained that if he was unable to serve the papers then the sheriff's department would become involved.  When I asked him what address he had it was one I lived at two years ago.  I told him that it was the wrong address and he gave me a number to call 866-441-6224 as well as a reference number.

I called and a guy who sounded really bored answered "Legal Department."  I gave him the reference number and he transfered me to another guy who answered with a "Hello."  I gave him the reference number and he "went to look up the file" for a minute then came back. He gave me this long spiel on how my wife owed an old credit card and that it was up to $1,991.70.  That his "client" had sent me a letter 45 days ago but since we haven't lived at this new address in two years we hadn't gotten it.  He then asked if there was anyone I could borrow the money from and that he needed payment today!!  When I said there was no way I could do it he asked me some questions about my financial situation.  He then put me on hold to "talk to his clients" (His clients were supposedly some group simpled called ACMG) and then came back on the line saying  they would take $376.67 but only if I provided them with credit card information or a bank account.

I told him I didn't have either and he suggested I try and find someone who would help me out and gave me one hour.  He said he was authorized to put a stay of execution on the court order if I called him back in one hour.  Scared the living hell out of me.

The thing about this is it was an old debt, but one that was discarged in our bankruptcy and the called asking for my wife but delt with me no problem.  Come to think of it, I never got the guy who represented himself as a lawyer.

How funny. I just called "your" number and stated that you had left a message on my ex-husband's cell phone. First of all, the voice mail does not state who the phone belongs to, so you could be leaving the message with anyone. Secondly, you can only state that you are trying to contact "x", not why you are calling. Big mistake on your part. You left a VERY DETAILED message. It is a good thing that he has a recording chip in his phone. Now I have proof of your illegal activities.

When I called you, I asked very nicely for your address. You refused to give it. Now why would a legitimate business refuse to give out their address ? After all, you are not going to receive any money if people cannot reach you. Then came the clincher. You claim that Mike Jones does not work for you. The very same day he called too. Wow. You are tripping yourself up, aren't you ? So, how many names (aliases) do you use ?

The bottom line is the Texas Attorney General's Office is very interested in your "company" now. So is the FTC. They were quite worked up over your phone call to (once again) my ex-husband and your use of both my maiden and married names. Poor Dear. I haven't used my maiden name in 17+ years and that is way beyond any statute of limitations. Unless you now want to accuse me of murder.
