Pop up screen on computer with a voice stating my computer is infected. I need to call this number, Microsoft, to have it fixed. I think not. The voice does say to not shut down your computer or terrible things will happen. I did shut it down, and so far things seem to be find. Do not call the number - the Microsoft tech scam.

Same as above, on screen warning on bright red background box. Despite their dire warnings i shut down computer (only thing to do as I couldn't close any open windows in Firefox.

Same thing, got message on computer. Called and spoke to a ([***]) Indian m'er f'er wanted $500.00 and my credit card information to fix my computer. i gave him my card info thinking he would fix my computer and he not only took $500.00 from my but the other $4,834.00 of savings as well.
When i called back they would not answer, the bank said it's nothing they can do because i gave them my card info.

I'd talk to the bank officer about this.  You should be able to get the transaction  reversed for fraud.  Make certain you change out your card and the account that the money was taken out of.  DO IT NOW!

Internet security 101:  Never give control of your computer to anyone you do not personally know.

A web page with an IP address of 165.227.190.214 popped up with a message saying Internet Security Alert Code 055BCCAC9FEC and listing this phone number. It is purported to be Microsoft Support number. The message asks to call this number before the PC is shut down.

Its a "Tech Support scam" Pop Up that you got from visiting a malicious website, an email or was tricked into downloading something that contained the Virus.

Ditto most above responses. Microsoft Support scam. I shut down computer, didnt bother calling number. Afaik, nothing unpleasant has happened to my computer.

It's definitely a social engineering scam.  It's malicious code -- not sure how was downloaded to machine.  It could have been placed someplace innocent.  I'm rather careful.  Interestingly -- I use Firefox and someone else in this message thread mentioned they were using Firefox.  This is otherwise an excellent browser, but the most recent update stinks for this reason and an increase in ad blockers being ineffective.

This malicious code is inserted into ad servers without the knowledge of the hosting site. The ad server companies need to be much more proactive in screening out these scareware pop-ups and be held accountable for damages incurred by those fooled into calling this and similar numbers.

Same as everyone else on  here.  Also watch out for same pop-up, with exact same message, but with the # 844-858-5786.  I did call the 2nd #, and talked to a "Damon Eaton", but got suspicious when he asked me if I did banking online and so forth.  He wanted $100 to fix my computer and a credit card # or checking account.  Nope, I hung up.

Called that phone, the Indian guy asked for $250 for fixing it.  I hung up.

Same problem with MS Edge.  Didn't click on any links.  But might have inadvertently (darn new keyboard!) clicked on an advertisement.  This krap popped up and kept replicating until I killed it with Task Manager.  Can't we drop a Smart Bomb on these lame SOBs?

I'm in full agreement.  If  can sue for slip & fall, we should be able to sue poorly maintained sites.

I'm thinking Mike is hosed, unless he has a great bank.  Sounds like he gave them his debit card.   I'd love to drop a smart bomb on these M/F's just to get their attention.

How did you get rid of it with Task Manager?

You shut down the browser.  Then you clear out the cache and cookies.  Then you find a browser that won't allow popup without your permission and will allow you to install things like an ad blocker.  Shut off Java script and Flash as well.

Pop up on my pc as described by others. Called .asked me to click. I did not and searched the#.fakezDo not call. Just shut computer.

I did not get a phone call; instead I received an alert (red screen) on my laptop stating that I was at risk. The 866 number was listed and I spoke with the person on the other side of line, whom They gave access to...until he asked I type my cc information after he’s set up an account for me on coinbase... unfortunately I’m just now seeing the lengthy discussions about this phone number. In the end, I didn’t give or type my cc number and shut my computer down manually! He kept saying it would be blocked/shut permanently. Not sure I understand what that means...but will prob find out as soon I restart my computer
