I was called into Human Resources at work after being out of the office on Jury Duty.  HR was told Legal Claims Services has been trying to serve me at home and not been able to get ahold of me. They told HR that I have until August 26th to call this number 866.697.3175 and arrange to have papers served to me at home or the Sheriff would show up at work to serve me papers.  I called the number and it was an autovoice response asking me to enter an extension. No extension was provided. Is that even legal??

    Argh...!
I just got a call from 213-894-1565.  Caller ID said it was "US Govt."  Some dude left a message similar to what has been described previously, telling me to call 866-697-3175, and reference a "case number."

Honestly, I panicked a bit, hearing that.  But then I thought to check the 866 number.  I'm sure glad they did!  Theses scum-sucking bottom-feeders even called my mum and left their message on her machine!

Yes, they deserve to be shut down.  No other collection agency I know uses these types of tactics.

Besides, I heard that it's illegal for them to threaten legal action without actually intending to file such action.

So, swimfish, I'd talk to a lawyer about this, or contact the FTC or some-such person/organization.

    I know I will...

    Whoops...!

I said "I'm sure glad they did."  I meant no such thing.

I meant to say: "I am sure glad that I did," meaning, of course, that I had looked up these @&#$'s phone number.

i called the phone number and a woman answered,I gave my case number and she said let me direct you to the correct department,a man answered and said litagations. He said i was being suied and to avoid having my bank accounts frozen, etc. etc. I better pay now .It was not even a credit card that i remembered i had,i am so stupid, iwas so scared I gave my debit card informatation,my address.Lucky I looked on line and the bank had not yet cleared. Why are they not in JAIL in stead of preying on inocent people.
i take care of six grandkids and struggling so hard,it breaks my heart to see what is happening to our AMERICA.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS - BREAKING THE LAW!
They will call and leave a message "I strongly suggest you call us with your case number".  They will tell you that some OLD debtor is suing you and your only way out is to settle now in full.  DON'T DO IT!!!  First, call your county courthouse (they have to sue you in your current city/state) and see if a judgment has been filed.  If not - then send them a cease and desist letter forbidding anymore contact - send this certified/return receipt requested.  If they continue to call you or contact you - you can sue them or turn into Federal Trade Commission (I suggest this anyway).

Also, if you did owe the debt at one time, I suggest you check your state's statute of limitations on whatever kind of debt this is (the Attorney General for your state has current Statutes).  My state is 5 years - if the debt was turned over to collections more than five years ago - this is illegal and they can not do this.
    '
Ignore their threats of repossessing vehicles, computers, etcetera (they may try this).  Also ignore their threat of having you thrown in jail.  This is not a possibility.

VERY IMPORTANT -- NEVER GIVE NEW PERSONAL INFORMATION - IF THEY ASK YOU TO VALIDATE YOUR ADDRESS, ASK WHAT THEY HAVE - IF IT IS WRONG SAY IT'S FINE --- THEY MAY BE DOING ALL THIS TO GAIN NEW INFORMATION TO RE-OPEN THE CLAIM DEBT!!!

I just received a voicemail on my cell phone, call came in from a "Private" number.  A man, who did not leave his name, said that he was with the Process Service Office regarding a civil complaint that was being filed against me.

He provided me with my "case number" and stated that I needed to call 866-697-3175 within 24 hours to avoid a Failure to Appear in response to a Summons to Appear in court.

Seeing as how I have NEVER received a Summons to Appear in court in the first place, and after reading all of your previous replies about this phone number, I have no intention of calling these people back.

    Thank you for the information.

Swinfish, have u heard anything? Legally, unless anyone serves u at ur door, threats over phone or any other freezes can do no harm. Serving u at ur door also cause money which I doubt they will. It will cost them more to take u to court then get u to pay up.
I am pretty pissed off they got my work number as well. Eventually I talked it out with my HR and they give them their last words if they called again because its illegal to call a company about other matters.

My husband is being harrassed by these people!!!!!!! They have left multiple messages with his employer stating he has to call back regarding a legal matter and leave a case number. They have called his cell, leaving voice mails about appearing in court about a legal matter and request a call back on a case number. Now....they have called MY family in another state leaving messages about a legal matter, appearing in court and request a call back on a case number.
He has attempted to call back. They are hard to understand, keep asking for what extension he is calling and then they hang up on him!
Is this legal? Are they for real? Is this not considered harrassment? What do we do to make this stop?

These are the magic words:  Mail me a Debt Validation Letter.

By law (FDCPA) they have to do this.  And if they ask for your address, don't give it - they should have it already if they are legit.

I can just about guarantee you won't hear from them again.

This group is a bunch of low life scammers.

I received a message stating, "This is our final attempt at the delivery service for a Stacy Richards. I have some legal documents being sent out to the clerk's office and I'm calling to verify that somebody will be at the location on Friday between the hours of 9 and three to accept and sign off on the documents.  To avoid the failure, you need to call 866-697-3175. The case number is 66297-24. If there is no callback within a 24-hour period we'll deem the property ??? and the information will be issued!"
The receptionist would not give her name or identify the company. "Derek Smith" answered the phone. He said he was in litigation in California. He would not tell me more. He was extremely rude.

    Really??
I got a call from my supervisor at work (currently on maternity leave for another week) saying that I got a call and they left this number and a case number that I need to call back in 24 hours. I plugged the # in google and got this website. They left her with no company name and no one to refer to which I thought strange. As soon as I hung up I got a text from my EX husband that his mom got a call on her cell for me for the same thing. We have been apart for over 2 years. I told him it was a scam and if they called her again to have them send me a debt validation letter and only get in contact with me but to not tell them how since they should know. He said they would never give out my info (we are still friendly with each other luckily) and that they are happy I looked it up before doing anything. I just wonder who I am going to get a call from next about this.
