They claim to be representing a lawyer named Michael Harris, but this number doesn't match up to anyone by that name.    My wife talked to a Madison Reyes, if that's really her name.  It had to do with a financial matter from years ago, and it seems very fishy.  Everyone we've talked to thinks it's a phishing scam to get more info from us and steal a LOT of money.

They already have your information.  They want money.

Whenever someone tells you that they are a "lawyer" or that they work for a lawyer or law firm, the first question you should ask is what state(s) they are registered in and their BAR number for that/those state(s).  Then go to that state and check them out, contact them directly using the information in the state registration, as these crooks have been known to research real law firm names and attorney names and impersonate them.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

You can also file a complaint with the FTC who will then direct you to the CFPB.  Or you can simply go to the the FTC website and file a complaint which will again be redirected to the CFPB.  No matter what you are going to end up reporting the complaint to the CFPB so why not go there first and forget about the FTC?  I mean seriously, you are not actually going to report anything about debt collection directly to the FTC but hey, knock yourself out!  https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/assistant

Perhaps start with telling about the call and all the things they said to you. The more details you give, the more someone can help figure it out.

They call and left a Message., They claim to be calling from Pierce process office and representing a lawyer named Michael Harris, But it is a total scam call or have Process office,  Lawyer usually don't call you they will mail you Notice(s).

I got the same call today saying they are going to file a lawsuit against me from a credit card I supposedly had in 2001.

Same… got a call from a Brian at Trinity something said he works for a lawyer… from San Francisco California.. trying to collect from a credit card 25 years ago .. what can be done.  They sent an email to sign    And I put it in archive   When I opened that email it was unable to open

My fiance got a call from this number stating that they were a lawyer trying to obtain payment on a cc he supposedly had in 2006.  Truly scary how much information that they had on him to make this legit.  I started looking into it, because I am aware of SOL on debt and the fact that when my fiance did call Citibank (where the cc he supposedly had was from) Citibank could not even find him in the system.  Thought well OK, it's old and if it was sold, maybe ok....but everytime you call this number, they answer hello, please hold.  NEVER do they identify what "FIRM" they supposedly are.  When I finally got to talk to the "lawyer" for the case the first time, she rattled off all kinds of numbers at first and gave me some information that would be public record so scary as it is that she had it, that's where she got it.  I had told her I would talk to my fiance more and get back to her.  That's when I did more research online and found this number.....so then I tried to call back in again to see what I would get.  This time the phone rang once then a man's voice recording stated, "I am away from my desk, call back in 10 minutes."  All of this is screaming scam....Never ever would an attorney's office answer in any of the ways we have been experiencing.  SCAMMMMMMMM!!!

They called and said they were trying to serve me papers. Call Michael Harris. When calling they just said hello. No lawyer office name

Left a message saying it was from a county I used to live in stating they had received court documents meant for me as undeliverable and unsigned and that I needed to call Michael Harris at 1-866-759-0047 and give this document number they left on my voicemail. So I googled Michael Harris in my old county and it says he had died recently... I just had a weird feeling it was a scam. So I never called but got to this site and been reading all y'all's comments so I now know it is a scam. Thanks everyone!!

Anna, from what I've read from all the comments here on this page, and I'm pretty sure the courthouse doesn't go calling people. They mail out certified letters. You can always call the county clerk in your county and asked if that's something they do.call people like that. It's a pretty safe bet it's a big scam... I would delete and block number and not stress about it anymore. I hope this helps you...
