The growing number of ex-students overwhelmed with student-loan debt might want to consider a career switch and become a collector of overdue student loans.

Sadly, it's no joke. As Bloomberg explains, one such collector made $454,000 in a single year, most of it in bonuses for getting people to pay up. His boss, the CEO of Educational Credit Management Corp., makes than more than $1 million in salary, along with some sweet commuting perks.

ECMC, a Minnesota non-for-profit group, owes its success to an 18-year-old agreement with the U.S. government. The company charges fees to borrowers and earns commissions from taxpayers, which can total as much as 37 percent of a borrower’s entire loan amount when it collects on defaulted student loans. ECMC says it typically collects 31 percent, or $7,750 on a $25,000 loan.

ECMC is one of 32 little-known “guaranty agencies”. They oversee student loans for the U.S. Education Department, which began its lending program in 1965. The groups guarantee loans made by banks and other private lenders. They promise to repay the lenders if borrowers don’t. If the agencies can’t recover the money, the federal government takes over the loan, shifting the risk to taxpayers. And did I mention they are nonprofit?

The U.S. law allows student-loan collectors confiscate wages without a court order and seize tax refunds and Social Security checks. Also, there is no statute of limitation on collecting student loans, which are rarely discharged through bankruptcy.

It appears ECMC frequents the website as someone under the nickname "ECMC" posted the following message:

"If we call, you owe us money. Alternatively, someone may have listed YOU as a "reference" for the account in which case we expect you to point us in the direction of the individual responsible for the money owed to us. We are under NO (legal) obligation to "remove you" from ANY list (or to stop calling you, for that matter) unless and until you WRITE us with the specific request to Stop Calling or Contacting you. Good luck getting any of us to just give you our mailing address."

You are a FRAUD!!! I got a call from you and checked all of my student loans on the NSLDS site. When I looked at all of them and called the current servicing company every one of them was still showing current and my status was still listed as "enrolled" like it should have been. How can I be defaut on loans for which have not been through the 6 month waiting period and I'm still in school using them. You guys are a bunch of idiots. The first question out of your "salepersons" mouth when he got me on the phone was that he wanted my SS number. Why would that be his first question. He didn't even ask for my name!!!!!!

Total SCAM!! Watch out for them to all the students out there...They know nothing about you and want you to give them the information!!! Don't give them anything and check with your loan servicing company and also your credit report. If they are both clear and current, tell these idiots to fly a kite like I did.

Did you misread alfalfa's post? HE is not the holder of your loan; he's just trying to post some imformation to help people.  Why do you call alfalfa a fraud?

October 28, 2012 I got another voice mail. I call them and ask why do they call me on sundays when I am not at work. They informed me it is an automative service and it will keep doing it until I pay my loan. I told them okay keep calling on Sundays and see where it gets you.

Received recorded message from ECMC who left the 866-945-6584 number. I'm way beyond being a student & never had any student loans. For info , complaints, about recorded message calls go to "fcc.gov" & search 'unwanted telemarketing calls'. They do have a online complaint form. It used to be illegal to call a home with a recorded message without first asking permission of the resident by a live person making the call.

Sick of these calls.

If anyone gets calls from this group, here is their contact information.  I have utilized the FBI, Secret Service and Interpol to go after these inept a------s as possible terrorist links funding ISIS in the Middle East.  These jerks will not go away so we may as well utilize the Governmental services to stop these f----d up people and maybe they will learn to stop screwing around with the public with such scams, rip-offs, etc.

I got two calls within one hour saying my social security number was being used for "suspicious activity" and to call them. It's definitely spam.
