Well he got your number by plugging in an area code and every exchange and number available in that area code and then set his auto dialer to call every one of those numbers.  Now by you calling him back, he will get your money because you probably just incurred international rates as well as a fee that will be billed by your phone carrier in the next cycle.  More than likely he is now laughing all the way to the bank.

DO NOT return the call from someone calling from a 876 area code.
This is not a toll free "800" number, it is the international long distance code for the island nation of Jamaica. You are charged international and long distance rates for calling this number. Other international/long distance area codes are 809, 284, and 649.
    http://www.att.net/smartcontrols-809AreaCode

Scammers use these numbers to not only try to scam you out of money, but also sting you with high phone call rates.

    http://www.dhs.gov/news/2013/03/13/written-te ... 2%80%9C876-scam

Do report the calls, Jamaican and US officials are still actively tracking down and arresting the offenders:

    Also:
    It is a scam:
    http://info.pch.com/consumer-information/fraud-protection

They never require any money, purchases, taxes, fees, or deposits of any kind to get your prize.

Publishers Clearing House DOES NOT call, email, FAX, mail, any advanced notice that you have won.

"If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to represent PCH, or claiming to be one of our employees,  and asked to send or wire money (for any reason whatsoever, including taxes); or send a pre-paid gift card or Green Dot Moneypak card in order to claim a sweepstakes prize – DON’T!  It’s a SCAM. If you are sent a check, told it’s a partial prize award, and asked to cash it and send a portion back to claim the full prize award, DON’T.  The check is fake, but the SCAM is real!

Publishers Clearing House does not operate this way and would NEVER ask for money to claim a prize award.  PCH employees would never contact you personally or in advance to notify you of a prize award.  Our prize awards are presented just the way you see in our popular TV commercials, ‘live and in person’ by our Prize Patrol, with balloons, champagne and check in hand - - and with no advance notification!"

    LMAO in NOLA
Received call from private number and they asked for my mother by name (First & Last). I told him that I was her daughter and she couldn't come to the phone right now, ONLY b/c I like messing with these idiots sometimes, I didn't tell them she passed away 10 months ago.
Anyway, the man said that he was calling from Publishers Clearing House and that her name was drawn and she had won over $2 million and a Mercedes but in order to get the check delivered and not have to pay any taxes on it he gave me specific instructions.
...."Go to Western Union and get a government receipt", "send $299.00 to Wesley Mcinposh (supposedly their IRS man), address Jamaica Jamaica. Then speficaly told me "KEEP PRIVATE", "DON'T TELL WESTERN UNION IT'S FOR IRS", "TELL THEM IT'S FOR A SICK FAMILY MEMBER"!!! LMAO at this point! "Then once I get home I'm supposed to call Mr. Washington at 1-876-897-2570 and say I have the receipt.".
Then he tells me, before we hang up, that the $2 mil. dollar check is waiting and is only 15 minutes away from my house and will be delivered 20 minutes after let them know I have the government receipt and that it's been verified with Wesley Mcinposh. Oh! And that when they bring the check I will have to give them the receipt to get it, HaHaHa!
★This is one of the funniest scams with some of the dumbest ppl I've EVER dealt with. I just hope no one falls for it!!

Got a call stating that he was calling from Farmington NM and I had won $475,000 in a mega millions game. I knew it couldn't be true since I hadn't entered any game and I don't live in NM, although I still have my NM cell number. I kept questioning the validity of this call and he hung up.

I feel sorry for all of you who "won" $275,000. He told me I won $15 million plus they would pay all of my utilities for a year. (Like I would need that with the $15 million!) I guess even phone scammers get bored and have to make up crazy stuff. He said his name was Freddie, from down In Baton Rouge, Louisiana. That was no Louisiana accent. I was busy at the time, or I would have played with him for a while. I just told him I didn't need that much money and he could keep it and retire.

I just got a call from this number 876-897-7482, the caller Id said Jamaica, so I answered, I couldn't really understand the caller, but he was saying that I entered into some contest, which I never did, said I was chosen, and that I had one $197,000. RED LIGHT. I said yeah right, I believe that like I believe I won some swamp land down in Florida hanging up saying you have a blessed day I hung up the phone, and as I was hanging up I could him saying oh my....., like he didn't believe I was not accepting these winnings.

There are ongoing investigations, but with so many people in Jamaica working this scam it's difficult to make a dent in this problem.

Yes! I got a call at 8:10 this morning 9/30/16 from a hard to understand dude. He kept telling me that, "this is real. Do you understand?". I kept asking questions. Then he tells me that he is coming to my house to deliver it. Anyone who knows me would agree that is not a good Idea. Supposed to be here about 11:30am. I let you know how much I won LOL.

    Seriously!!!!!!
Called me this morning - even muted him to answer another call and he hung up and called right back.  I won the 1st prize of 2.5 Million Dollars from the Publishers Clearing House!  Ha!  He asked me to get a pen and paper out to write down some information the men delivering my check would need to verify the prize, so I started writing down information knowing I wasn't giving him any of mine.  In the middle of him giving me his bade # etc., he said now write down your name.  Ha, yea right!  Next he asked me repeat the information, so I went out of order and did NOT say my name. Then he said, okay here is the confirmation #, which was his badge # he had just given me!  I laughed... then he said the guys were in a city near me.... (actually gave me the name of the City), are you home he says?  I said yes, he says will you be there all day long?  I said yes, he said okay, how far are you from _______?  I said um, about 2 hours... he said from ____________, where are you?  I said, you don't know?  He then named my City and immediatley hung up!
