Can anyone tell me if they have gotten a call from a man by the name of Mark Smith saying he is from the Legal Services Department? If so is he real or just a scam?

I just got a call from them saying they have two outstanding loans for me, I never ever took out a loan but I said I wanted proof said send them to my email....he said whatever and hung up what the hell is this BS...This is SUCH a scam!!!

I received the same phone call, this is a strong tactic from a debt collector. I refuse to entertain debt collectors who use force.

I got a call from Mark Smith claiming he was with Legal Services Department and that he was coming to serve papers tomorrow. He stated that all dogs and guns would need to be removed from the property prior to him showing up. I asked what the matter was regarding and he gave me a number for E.W. Pendleton and Associates, when I called them and gave them my case number it was for the wrong person. They asked what my name was, when I told them they said I gave them the wrong case number and I owed them $2750.00 for a pay day loan. I have never taken a pay day loan nor have I ever heard of anyone getting that much money on a pay day loan. They stated that I had made moneygram payments to them in 2006 for this particular matter. After getting off the phone with them I contacted the Attorney General.

Yes, I just got one today. He said he will be at my house tomorrow around 1 PM.

I received a called today informing me that if I didnt contact the 1-877-513-3996 Timothy Bradwell with The Department of Legal Services @ this time I'm notifying you that I will be visiting you at your residence or place of employment within 24-48 hours to issue a legal correspondence,  if you do have any questions or concerns in regards to this matter please do feel free to direct all calls to 877-513-3996. Once again 877-513-3996. yeah right, Mr. Bradwell aka Joe McCloud aka Joe McClure...Taking this  information to the Attorney General's Office !! Bring on the supena, I'll dance with you in court.

I got the same call from e.w. Pendleton. 877-513-3996. A very rude and threatening message about coming to my work or home. I called back numerous times and received voicemail. Finally got a hold of some jerk named Joseph McNamara. He started in about legal stuff. I bitched him out and told him I knew he was a debt collector and that I have spoken to my lawyer and that I know the fair credit laws. I then said the following.
1. It is illegal for you to threatened my work or home.
2. I am informing you now that you can nO longer contact me by phone.
3. You are not an attorney or law enforcement & it's illegal to say you are.
4. You will not harass me or speak to me in an antagonistic manor.
5. What's your bottom line?

He went on to give a big line about collecting a debt in which very sternly and repeated said "what's your bottom line?" finally he said it was something I owed from 2001. He was actually right. I paid it and they immediately emailed me proof of payment and that the debt had been settled. They asked for my SSN and my new address but I said I would not give it to them. I only verified that an old address they had was correct.

Anyway they use scare tactics. It's illegal. If you've gotten such a call and want to call them back, read the fair credit act first so you're armed with your rights and the laws they're breaking. Oh and if you want their address it's 1560 Harlem rd, suite 10, buffalo, NY and the agent named on the email is a Kristen turner. I think she's the secretary because he said his secretary would email it to me.

i just got the call too!! ive been on the phone with my bank account all morning!! Trying to figure out all this cause the debt they are saying i owe is a CASH asap loan which i have never done...uggg i hope its a scam what happened? did they come the next day?

they said i owe a debt that i cant even find threw my bank account, cause they said i made a couple payments and then just stopped. they gave me dates and everything for these payments...ive had only 1 checking account for the last 15 years and my bank found NOTHING

did they ever show? wondering cause i went threw this today and a guy is supposedly coming to my house tomorrw

I just got a call from E W and after doing my research I called 911 to report the scam. They advised me NOT to give out any info. If I feel I am in danger to report an officer right away.

glad i didnt pay NO ONE showed up at my house all day as they said they would...scammers. Hopefully people will do there research first

They left a message for my husband. Saying they going to his job or come to our home. Said no guns or dogs on property. But they can come I have a sister that work for the federal government & 3 cousins that work for local law enforcement. My next door neighbor is a police officer as well. Let them come I will call the Attorney General Office as well. Calling and leaving messages like that.

I also just got a message from a Miles Smith (at least I think he said Miles.  I see above a number of people saying Mark).  He said he would be at my home and/or place of business tomorrow between the hours of 1 and 2 to deliver legal documentation concerning SEVERAL allegations that have been lodged against me and in which I was named respondent and he said it was tied to...and he gave me the last four digits of my social security number.  He then said if I had any questions or concerns I could call the legal department at 1-877-513-3996 and they would give me information.  I called the number which was E W Pendleton and associates and they had me spell my name and asked the last four digits of my social.  They then told me I was the wrong person and apologized for any inconvenience.  I am going to call the Attorney General's office to see what is going on.

I got a message on my cell and home phone saying they will be at my resident with 24 hours or so he stated some other hame and never said ew pendleton and assoc.  I decided to look the phone number up on computer and I found out I am not the only one.  I called back after hours and didn't send caller id and it said they do not except unknown callers, then i called back and got answering machine and told them I contacted the atty generals office and they would be contacting them.  I told thm not to call my numbers again and stop harrassing me.  Thank you all for the information about this scam.  I can't believe there are people out there like this!  

I just got a call from a process server telling me that he would be out to serve me papers tomorrow.  Now he did not know what it was for nor could he open the envelope, but when he got here I would need picture id to receive the paperwork.  Of course hr gave me a telephone number to call, but unfortunately there was noone available at E W Pendleton (1-866-638-1964) to give me any information.  It can't be a credit card debt, I have not had a card in 7years.  So we shall see who shows up tomorrow.  Maybe I'll just open my door and my dog will accidentially get out.  OOOOOOhhhhhhh,   poor guy - my rottie shepherd hasn't been fed meat in 6weeks.

You know - something just occurred to me.  NEVER in the history of process serving or legal notice serving, has anyone ever called the receipent of the legal papers been called ahead and warned they would served papers betweem this hour and that hour.. Ok, I feel better now that common sense has taken over.

I received a message from Mark Smith at the Department of Legal Services. There was no threat to show up at my home or work, but he did have a 'docket number' that he wanted to speak to me as I was named as a respondent. When I called the number (866-638-1964), no one answered as it was after hours. I do not recognize the name of Pendleton and Associates, nor can I recall any of the sorts of debts listed here. The most frightening part was that he mentioned both my maiden and married names, as well as the county in which my parents live (a state away from me). Very, very odd. Has anyone seen any actual follow-through on these ludicrous calls - like has anyone shown up at houses or continued with legal action? I do agree, though - I don't recall law enforcement ever calling ahead to notify someone of papers being served.

Do not fall into the trap these scammers are trying to pull saying they are from E.W. Pendalton and associates.  State of Texas Attorney General's office says it's a scam. They said to immediately get any of your info changed and don't give anyone any money. They also said if any collection agency is collecting money you will be notified by mail. Nobody will come to your door within 48 hours to issue a court summons if you don't pay. If anything in collections would ever go to court it would be small claims court. These scammers have and know just enough information about you to make the entire thing believeable. Don't fall for it. You let them know you'll be contacting the FBI, police your state Attorney General and whoever else.
