I got a call at work from my wife who said I had received a call from this "Rockwell Office." I called the number back and a guy who went by the name of John Amos told me that he had lawsuit papers ready to serve me from US Bank.  He proceeded to give me an old account number that I had from US Bank from at least 15 years ago and said that I owed US Bank over $4,000.  I grew suspicious because, one, I had never received any written communication from this "Rockwell Office."  A debt collector must send you an initial notice in compliance with the FCRA, notifying you that it has been assigned a debt, plus you must be given 30 days to reply and dispute the validity of the claim.  A debt collector cannot just start calling out of the blue and claim you owe money.  He said in order to avoid having the papers served, I would have to set up an arrangement with him then and there on the phone.  I said I would call him back later.  Meanwhile, I checked with our banker at our local US Bank branch and she assured me that we did not owe US Bank anything and she said the call I got was likely a scam.  So, armed with that information, I called Mr. Amos back and told him that I had been in touch with a representative of US Bank who assures me that I do not owe them what you claim, and that my next phone call was going to be to the attorney general's office of my state.  He said he was sorry that I wanted to do that (like heck).  I downloaded a complaint form from the consumer protection department of our attorney general's office, filled out the form and filed the complaint.  It turns out that the FBI has been investigating these bogus outfits for some time.  It seems they buy old debt from years ago for pennies on the dollar and then they start with the threats and attempted fraud.

My wife informed me that I had a phone message from "Rockwell Office." The return phone number to call was 877-713-4371. I called the number and was referred to a Mr. John Amos.  Mr. Amos proceeded to tell me that he had lawsuit papers to deliver to me.  He went on to tell me that this stemmed from an account with US Bank in which I supposedly owed $2,211.72.  This news of course came completely out of the blue.  I am a US Bank customer and have never received anything in writing that I had a delinquent account for that kind of money.  Mr. Amos also informed me that if I wasn't prepared to make arrangements then and there, he would serve the papers to me and the amount would balloon to $4,711.72 (after penalties and interest).  First of all, lawsuit papers have to be delivered in person.  Second, I had no prior written communication from either US Bank or this Rockwell Office informing me of said claim.  I suspected that I was being had here, so I contacted my banker at the US Bank branch I do business at.  She assured me that they had no record of my owing the bank anything.  Armed with that information, I called back and again spoke with Mr. Amos and informed him that I had just spoken with a US Bank representative and they had no record of my owing them anything.  I flat out told him that I believed he was attempting to perpetrate a fraud against me and that my next call would be to the attorney general of my state.  I haven't heard from him or anyone at Rockwell since.  I also submitted a consumer fraud complaint with my state's attorney general's office.  They subsequently escalated it on to the FBI, because apparently the feds have been investigating this "Rockwell Office" and other similar scams for quite some time now.  If you get a call from this Rockwell Office place, it is not legit.  Don't let them con you into anything.

I also was scammed by these people, I got a call at work from a "process server" asking if I would be available to sign, I asked what it was about and he gave me a case number and told me to call 877-713-4371, I spoke with a women named Anna Stark who informed me I owed them 8500.00 and if I did not give them a credit card payment of 1300.00 right now the sheriff would show up at my job and they would get me fired. I was stupid and gave them my credit card. After I hung up I knew I had been scammed, when I got home I checked my credit report and of course there was nothing on it, I also searched the courthouse and no case was filed so obviously there was nothing to serve me. I then contacted my credit card company and disputed the charge as fraud. Thankfully they ruled in my favor and I got the charge reversed. I then filed a complaint with the FTC and the Illinois Attorney General for consumer fraud. Now I am waiting for a call back once then realize they don't have my money. I am so looking forward to that call, if it happens again I will sue for violation of the FDCPA, completely illegal what they are trying to do to people. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM!!!

More on this "Rockwell Office" scam.  I checked back with the Consumer Protection Division of the attorney general's office for my state; and I was informed that they referred my information on to the FBI!!  It seems that the Feds have been investigating this "Rockwell Office" and other similar scams for quite some time now.  Thankfully, I gave them no credit card or checking account information, so it isn't likely that I will personally get scammed out of any money by these crooks.  What they are doing is completely illegal and in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ... not to mention they're probably in hot water for numerous potential criminal counts that would include mail, telephone and wire fraud.  DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM AND DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANYTHING!!  If you get a call from this "Rockwell Offices" place...take down as much information as you can about the name of the person who called, and the time and date they called.  Give this information to the attorney general's office for your state and file a complaint with their office.  Also, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Rick, you have me scared.  I don't know what to do.  My lawyer had me run my credit just to see what it shows regarding the account that Rockwell is attempting to collect on.  The account is clearly on my credit report, and I know that I owe the money.  I am thinking about having my attorney negotiate a settlement for me.  I don't feel like I am being scammed because I know I owe the debt.

Bea, I don't mean to scare you.  However, when you look at it this way, what kid of a legitimate collection agency would openly be violating every law in the book (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, numerous state laws, you name it).  First of all, any debt collector which has been assigned an account must notify you in writing by mail to your last known address that they have your account and in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).  If you dispute the debt, you have 30 days from the date of the notice to inform them of that.  Then the collection agency is required not only to verify the debt, but they must also validate the debt from the creditor that sent them the account.  If they do not provide a debtor with proper validation within this 30 day window, then they must clear the matter from their records.

Since thie "Rockwell Offices" place did not send you written notice (I assume) and give you this initial 30 day window that is required by the FDCPA, they are already in violation of the law...coupled with the fact that they start calling people like you out of the blue like they did with me and start making threats, they've just dug themselves in deeper.

The FBI is investigating these crooks and I mean they ARE crooks.  Do not give these people a dime.  If your lawyer is any kind of a lawyer, he or she would have smelled that this was a scam a long time ago.  As an officer of the court, he or she is required by law and under the canons of the bar in your state, to report these people to the proper authorities in your state.

I have received so many collection notices, they all start to run together.  I am not sure if they sent something or not.  My attorney indicated that they would be able to use a legal device to recover a debt that I am aware that I owe.  Still scared, but realize that I need figure out a way to get the debt issue resolved.  I have been avoiding this for a few years now.  I had them send a settlement offer to my attorney, all the info is correct.

Whether or not you actually owe this debt is irrelevant. I would then suggest you contact the original creditor in order to make some sort of a payment arrangement if that is your desire.  Meanwhile, as the others have suggested, do not fall for this scam.  Your attorney is duty bound as an officer of the court to report this "Rockwell Office" people to the proper law enforcement authorities of your state.  In doing some further research on this, I have learned that the FBI has been investigating this "Rockwell Office" scam and others like it for some time, now.  You know, truthfully, this has to be some sort of a major scam if the feds are investigating it.  The feds haven't been able to pull the trigger on a raid of this place as of yet...I suspect they are building as airtight of a case against these cons as they can before they turn it over to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution.  Again, do not give these people a dime.  Your attorney really should know better.  I also did some digging and found out that "Rockwell Offices" does not have a website (the domain is expired from a prior user).  Plus the phone number 877713-4371/4370 has lit up numerous consumer fraud information boards.  All you have to do is google search the number plus "Rockwell Offices" and you will find numerous people have been duped by this scam.

Scam claiming to be collecting for a debt, and that they process servers working for a client that is about to submit your case to court (in CA).

Then they claim they give you a settlement for a fraction of what they claim you owe, and request your account information. Do not provide them that information unless they can provide the actual court documents, or something official from the company you owe that claims you owe this debt.

Contacting BBB about them as we speak

This is just another name used by the Corona Scam.

They fake "debts" using information from your own credit reports, and attempt to get you to pay them using illegal threats.

Contact the FTC, your state Attorney General, and the Riverside office of the FBI.
