No, it is criminal harrassment when debt collectors call neighbors or people who owe no debt. Record all their calls, log all their calls. Report them to their attorney general and your state attorney general. Report them to the FTC. Build a recorded and paper record. DEMAND a physical address from them that is verifiable. Send a cease and desist letter. Send it to PAYMENTS at their address if they refuse a certified letter. Sue them for EVERY FDCPA violation. Continue to SUE THEM. Lawyers will take these cases on commission.

And ALWAYS record their calls and file complaints with attorney generals and the FTC. SUE THEM for each and every FDCPA violation. They will stop calling then.

Have you considered getting a loan to go back to school?  Like most people who post on the internet, you write like you have no more than a 2nd grade education.

I work in an attorney's office.  We deal with collections agencies all the time because we process probate estates in my office and people often die with debt.  Of all the agencies I deal with in my job, collections agencies are the ABSOLUTE WORST!  It is not uncommon for me to get calls on debts before the person has even been burried.  These vultures don't even wait for the body to get cold before they start rummaging through the pockets.  It's unconscionable.  All that being said, for months now, my office has been receiving calls from a collection agency with an automated voice asking for a company that we do not represent.  I have called the number asking to have our number removed from their list as suggested and was told I would have to wait for them to call back and hold because they didn't know what number they were calling.  They have called back several times and each time I pressed the button to hold for a person and each time I was hung up on.  These people are not stupid.  These autodialer systems are flawed and in some states ILLEGAL.  You do not have to speak to any collections agency.  You are not required to work with any collections agency.  You only have to deal with the company you contracted with for the original loan, and you have a right to receive ALL communication in writing.  You don't have to "speak" with anyone.  If you have been called by mistake on someone else's debt, keep track of who called and when and get their address.  Write them a cease and desist letter (you can find templates on the internet) and send it certified return reciept.  If they continue to call them.  SUE THE HOLY HELL OUT OF THEM.  It is the only way this nonesense will stop.

    Don't Owe Anyone
I don't owe anyone, so why are they calling me?  I pay my student loan every month.  This calling is very annoying.  They're too lazy to search for whomever they're seeking, so they just keep calling everyday, while I'm at work, hoping someone will answer.

A few times I received calls asking for someone I boarded for 3-mths over 5 years ago and they said they'd remove my number, but I'm not sure if its still them calling.

Received a call, person on other line stayed quiet. Said "hello" and can hear the person breathing. Attempted several times and after a couple minutes they hung up on me.

I may be the only person who's actually had long-term contact with this company and one of the reps who says her name is Debbie and was actually civil to me on the phone although she did get pushy at times when I told her I had not way to pay. As far as I can tell they are the legitimate holders of one of my student loans. I haven't been able to start payments because they asked for 1/4 of the total debt up front as a 'good faith' payment and I told them where to stick that offer (if I can't make $100 a month in payments, where am I supposed to find $2k up front?). They still call occasionally but the call volume has dropped considerably.

They are however real people and when I called the original loan holder (the gov't) to confirm this they told me that they would NOT take payments or handle my loan any more since the account was passed to collections, and that I HAD to go through the collection agency which held the loan. So I guess I get to deal with Wyndham.

That said, if you're not in debt or aren't the right person, tell them to shove it. They are under obligation to prove that you have the debt and if they can't or they're harassing you over someone else's debt you should be able to report them. I wouldn't hesitate to do so. I hate dealing with these people and would encourage anyone being harassed to speak up so that these guys are kept in line.

Funny, because they tried to tell me that I should use my income tax refund this year to pay them. I told them it wasn't going to be a lot, and that I'd call if I had any left after I paid for my property taxes and all the other things that needed to be paid. They didn't have anything to say to that except that they urged me to use the money wisely to pay off my debt. That's what I did... paid off one of my smaller loans completely!

They've threatened me with wage garnishment too. Here in PA you need a court order to get wage garnishment and they would have to alert me to the fact that they're going to court for this. It would also have to be a certain kind of student loan through the state, not through the federal government. My loan is a Federal Perkins loan and they can't garnish wages for those loans through the PA courts. They'd have to take it higher and go through federal court. They have not followed through so far!

Know your rights and know your state laws. Wyndham's not as scary as some of the others but they're very pushy all the same and rely on your ignorance to make you pay up.

    SCAM & ID THEFT
Several different faux company debt collector names calling. When you block one another totally different company and person calls again saying the same thing. As a retired investigator this game tells me that someone got your name and sold it to the scammers, or---your name has been used in an ID THEFT RING. REPORT IT TO THE FBI-ONLINE---FILL OUT AN IRS ID THEFT FORM. FO NOT CALL THEM BACK--ONCE YOU DO THEY CONNECT THE LINE-YOU ARE HOOKED.

    Windham sucks
Yep, I owe for student loans. Except for the fact that the debt is too old, I'd qualify for debt forgiveness because of teaching in Title 1 schools for 20+ years. Anyone initiating the same debt after 94 or something like that gets forgiven. Instead, I get the opportunity to not answer any 800, 877, 855 or any unrecognized area codes, which once verified here, go on my phone power blocked list.

I love this. You have probably gone through the posts to see a fair number of "collectors" who are now resorting to checking these sites, reading "fanmail" against them. Must be getting tough for 'em. I don't pay, will not pay, even if I'm able to pay. I got a free college education --for whatever that's worth. Now spend some time and research how to never pay them, now or even after you kick this rock. Rob them, cheat them, f*ck them. Put them out of business. Finance and banks are the most crooked [***] on earth. Wreck them in every way possible.
