They called me at work (I didn't get to the phone in time to answer it), left no message.  Then called me on my cell, when I answered the phone, they hung up before they said anything, and left no message.

If they are really a collection agency, they aren't trying that hard to collect anything.

Called my cell.  Identified themselves as ConServe (google shows this website http://www.conserve-arm.com/).  Asked to verify my name and then last 4 of my social security number.  They gave me the wrong 4 digits.  I hung up without saying anything.  Seems very suspicious.

They called again (note my post on 2/15).  I actually talked to them, and it was for US Dept of Education student loans.  They explained I had defaulted on my student loans from college and the US Dept of Education uses them to collect those debts.
I was transfered to my "case manager" who was very rude and told me I needed to ask everyone I knew for the money to pay them off and I had until tomorrow otherwise they would garnish my wages.

A man called my husbands cell asking for me.  My husband said that I was not available.  The man then asked if this was the same number for .....(my old business, closed for ten years now.)

I googled the number and found this website.  I also owe a student loan, but I believe this call was in regards to an SBA (small business admin.)loan dating back to Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Calls me almost every day. I never answer, and they never leave messages. I think I inherited a phone number from someone who owes a lot of money, because this isn't the only 877 that calls me.

    yeah.whatever
called here about 3 times within a 5 minute period (not even my psycho exes called me that often...heh). didn't answer but decided "what the heck" and i called back. some place called ConServe...seems like a debt collector of some sort...very rude, ignorant and unprofessional.
JustMe - phone numbers are placed in auto-dialers these days....it's basically a software application that dials phone numbers at random, that way there's (usually) no room for error...
however, since it IS a computer dialing you and not a live person, this is why you get called at the [***] crack of dawn. not to mention, the numbers are entered by a human...and they can be setup to dial certain regions of the country at certain times..not saying the person who setup their auto-dialer really knew or cared how to set those options.

Got a call a voice said "grandma" then hungup I called back using the caller id and got these people. (I use the loosly) It has nothing to do with me it is for my brother and he had given them my number as a contact number. When I told them to remove it they said they have a federal legal right to call my home for my brother. Yup he lives here he has MS so bad he is a couple of steps away from a home and these people. (another loose usage) At this point I can onlysee that they are just making his life miserable because they can. But to the point. It is my phone and I pay the tab and I don't want to have them calling. I can pay extra to the phone company to have their calls rejected. But, isn't that punishing me for his errors? A place very close to the fire for this group.

A collection agency was prank calling me regularly either saying nothing or hanging up after the second ring. I suspect they are logging an attempt to make contact by phone and don't care to actually speak to anyone.

They are breaking the law by claiming to represent a government agency. That is a lie. You don't need to do anything except get their address. They must stop calling you if you send a letter requesting they stop calling.

Did you know that each year the Department of Education has 9 billion dollars in student loan defaults?  The reason for this is due to the fact that they have the colleges selling classes for jobs that are being exported overseas, isn't that silly.  Why fund education for jobs where no jobs exist?  That's America!

Think of it as a instructor and college subsidy program.  And that is this numbers business...trying to get back some of that 9 Billion so they too can pocket some money.

The Government just prints more fiat money.  See this collection flow chart for more information from their site.  http://www.conserve-arm.com/gfx/conserve_flow.jpg

I've been getting calls from this number for months now, and they usually call either in the morning or throughout the day until 6pm.
It's always a robocall with a woman voice asking if this is *my name with a mangled middle name*
reading through this, there absolutely no reason for them to call me, I'm in High School, and despite that im a senior, i haven't even begun applying for federal student loans--and even if i have, i wouldn't need to pay them back until 6 months after i graduate college anyways.

Has anyone tried the above address yet?

I do not know why they call you but NO one is suppose to call you at work without your direct permission--that is against the law; neither are they suppose to contact your neighbors and inquire about you or tell them, even if true, that you are a lousy .  I assume you did not give them permission as most people do not . Calling you at work is against the law and if this was a debt collection agency ---then they just paid off what ever you owe.
These folks call  and call the person by name and address and act like they are your long lost friend in an overly familar way.. You do not know who they hell they are and a good policy is to ignore any  such calls who do not identify themselves first and what business they represent. HANG UP ON THEM PROMPTLY.

Well what you say maybe true but what the main problem is that College Financial Officers first give student Pell Grants, the recruiters give the big come on about the need for professionals in certain areas.and then they deliver the cliff hanger---either you borrow the money or you do not continue your studies. Most students in a panic go ahead and  borrow. Then the college kicks them out knowing full well because the student is from a financially disadvanged background that the student will be unable to pay even if they do get a Mcjob.  The Colleges and Universities that are most guilty of this are those who are for profit. After them many state techinical two year schools do this ----because it gets them more grants ---then Universities. Students who have weak backgrounds, need to work to survive on the pitances that these grants and loans provide--often meet up with other obstacles---faculty who seem to think that you have a rich uncle and that you should not have to work.  Other types of faculty are of the arrogant sort who seem to think it is not there job to help you overcome any learning disabilities and difficulties that you have----again the student gets kicked out the door ---leaving them hanging without the ability to pay.  Some faculty when told that you will not be able to pay back loans if kicked you will claim that you will be able to it--these folks have their heads so far into the clouds that they have little sense of reality.  This all ends up in my view a case of double jeopardy which the Constitution of the United States says is illegal.
