Spoke with a person who said they were from DTE and needed to change my meter and wondered when I would be home for this to take place.  I mentioned that most utility companies tell the consumer that they will be there between a certain time period how is it that I can just make my own time.  She got real nervous and hung up.  We then called DTE and they said that they are not changing any meters and this is some kind of scam.

also got many calls. I finally called the number back and they said it was DTE & wanted to change meters. It sounded sketchy. I am calling DTE in the morning.

I also got a call and they said the exact same thing and asked if I would be home tomorrow. When I told them no they said thank you and hung up. Very strange. Did anyone find out who owns this number?

I went to http://www.donotcall.gov to register a complaint with this phone number.

Like others, I got the call, he claimed to be with DTE Energy and needed to schedule a time to read the meter im my basement.  I stupidly told him two days I was not going to be home and then got concerned about someone plotting a break-in.  
I called Ma-Bell - that was no help.
I *69'd the number but couldn't get through.
So, Finally I called DTE, went through the damn voice menu system, waited, waited and then got a human on the phone who confirmed that this was a legitimate call from DTE and not a thief trying to find a good time break in.

This call was from DTE as a reminder of a service call for my home tomarrow. 1st time they called I said hello twice and no one was there so I hung up. They returned my call and someone was there this time for my reminder. I think this is a computer generated call and it takes the customer service rep. too long to get on the line before we all hang up.

I received a call from this number saying they were from DTE and telling me they needed to check my meter.  I told them the meter is outside and they told me they needed to come inside.  They wanted to know when I would be home.  I asked them to send me a letter to this effect.  The lady got nervous and hung up.  I called DTE and they told me that there was nothing wrong with my meter.  This seems to be some sort of scam.

877-853-9434 is from DTE. I called the number on my billing statement to check it out & the appointment was confirmed.

They call about the same time everyday and I never answer and they never leave a message. Odd to have a 877 number not leave a message. BTW Why would anyone look up this number on this website and leave a message on board if they believed it was really DTE?

I also called DTE to ask about this number and appt. to change my meter.  They confirmed that it was valid.  I called the 877 number and got a DTE call center.  The service rep. was pleasant and informative.

NOT A SCAM. I answered the phone and a nice lady said that DTE will be in my area on Tuesday August 25 and wanted to make sure that someone would be home so that they could change the MAIN gas meter, the one in the basement. DTE Energy needs to make sure that their meters are updated. Mine was changed in 2006. It was 50 years old. It only took the guy less than half an hour. I informed the lady that mine has already been changed. She checked and verified that it had and apologized for the inconvenience.

YALL DONT HAVE TO BELIEVE THIS NUMBER IS US BUT WHEN THEY COME AND DIG UP YOUR GAS LINE YOU'LL BE UPSET CAUSE U DIDNT LET US MAKE OUR APPOINTMENT. WOULD U BELIEVE ITS DTE THEN? I HOPE SO.

Anybody who says this is DTE is involved with the scammers.  Nice try scammers.  Don't let them know when you will be home or not.

I too was skeptical, however this is a legitimate number.  My gas meter was just replaced as a result of this, it sure beats having your house blow up.  Anyway, call DTE directly after confirming the service, they will show it is booked and legitimate.
