I received a call, did not answer, called the number back and a automated voice informed me it was DTE. I went on DTE website and texted with a rep who told me: "That is a legitimate number. It is to set up an appointment to change your gas meter over to a smart meter."   Always good to check.

That is the best advice anyone should follow, since scammers do spoof legitimate company numbers and try tricking you to giving up personal info.

Yes they claimed to be DTE.  Not only did they want to change my meter but they wanted to come in home and do a gas leak test.

I would call DTE direct and ask them, since most Utility companies charge extra for anything done inside your home. Outside is their responsibility and usually no charge to change a meter, but its always best to call and find out before allowing anyone on your property.

Well, if it was the real utility that would not be a bad thing.  However, my experience is that they usually send out a letter telling you that they need to do that work.  Especially if they are changing all the meters around.  In any case, you can always check directly with them to see if the call was legitimate.

Extremely rude and pushy person claiming to be from DTE. Very rude Unpleasant experience. If this actually is from DTE, this representative should be fired

It is the gas meter people, be aware they are as dumb as sticks and get appointments wrong so if you make one for 8am-12pm he will arrive after 12 or 12pm-4pm he might not show up!

They called me before and were going to come out and change my meter on a saturday between 8-1.  I got up early and waiting around all morning, do you know they NEVER showed up!  I just got a call from this number and it was a recording telling me to please hold on for an important call from DTE I waited and waited and then they hung up!  Great Job DTE!!

Repeated call and hang up. When you answer no one comes on to talk. This is a legitimate DTE number. However. Scammers are also using it also. The one time they did answer, they want to know when someone will be at the building so they can get in. The meters are outside. 2 feet from the sidewalk , have been since the 50's.

I received a call from this number today and the lady on the other end stated that she was with DTE and that they wanted to schedule an appointment to upgrade my meter and do a meter read.  First of all the DTE is no longer in my name, my son took over the bills so he could build his credit.  If they were truly from DTE they would have known that and called him, NOT me.  I told her this and she quickly hung up.  I then called DTE and talked to a phone rep and told her about the call and she told me that they have been receiving several complaints lately about calls from people claiming to be with DTE, calling from this number!  This is a 3rd party gas supplier and they want to come to your home to get you to sign up with them as your gas supplier.  Whenever DTE calls it should show up on your caller ID as DTE and it didn't when they called me, and we have a new meter already and it's a smart meter so why would they need to upgrade our meter and do an on location meter read?  DTE confirmed that this was NOT DTE who called us.  Last year they kept showing up at our door claiming to be with DTE as well and asking to see a bill, but now they are making phone calls claiming to be DTE and scheduling "un-needed" appointments, just to try to lend a legit look to their purpose for being there.

Whenever DTE calls me it is from the main number ending in 4747 and they ALWAYS leave a voicemail if I don't answer. They also sent a letter out about changing my meter, and didn't call to set up an appointment.

They called saying they are DTE and they needed to schedule a time to upgrade my meter. I asked if i could call back with a time and they gave me a number to call back. I immediately called DTE at their standard customer service number and found that this is a legit phone call, and they are trying to schedule a time to upgrade my meter.

I just called the main DTE number: 1 (800) 477-4747 and spoke with a customer service rep. She did confirm they sent me the letter, that the 877-853-9434 number is legit, and to schedule my appointment.

This is a call from a DTE Outbound call center. I thought it was shady at first since it showed up as Unknown, but I simply DTE's main number at 1-800-477-4747 and they confirmed it was a DTE affiliate who reached out to me. The purpose of the call is about upgrading my old gas meter to a new one. It seems as though there is a barrage of misinformation from people who are unwilling to do even the least bit of research.

Talk about needing to do research. You need to research phone number spoofing.
By the way, if it "showed up as Unknown" why did you call DTE?

I received a letter in the mail to schedule an appointment to have my meter "repaired" I'm not even a DTE customer.  This reeks of scam.
