I also dont understand this part here: "If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail." where am I sending this? back to the people that sent it to me? what good will that do.

and also does it matter that I made the phone call and its all about my husband? he was on the call but didn't say anything... I just sent him a message telling him what was going on and confrensed him in and he listened?

What BigA is saying is that, after they send you the required letter that identifies them, the debt, the amount, who it was originally with, that you have a right to dispute it, etc., etc. (this is assuming they are a legitimate debt collector and follow the law), you need to send them a "debt validation letter" disputing the debt and demanding that they verify and validate it.  This means that they have to contact the original creditor to get the actual particulars on the debt (if it exists) and not rely on numbers given to them from whomever they bought the debt from (old debt is sold from one collector to another collector when they decide they are not going to collect and make any profit on it).  They have to report this information back to you, along with proof that they have the right to try to collect the debt and are licensed in your State to do so.  Make sure to send your letter to them by certified, return receipt mail (not email, not fax, not a request over the phone) so you have proof you sent it (make sure to indicate in your letter that you are doing so) and keep a copy of the letter (in case you need to go to court later) and when that receipt card comes back from the Post Office attach it to the copy of the letter you kept.

If you never receive that first required letter from them (and you should receive it in less than two weeks from the first time you talked to them (and that is being really generous with Post Office delivery time)), you can safely assume that they are not legitimate and they are trying to scam you out of your money.  You do not have to request that letter from them, they are required by law to send it to you.  As soon as you hang up after the first time you talk with them, the clock starts ticking.

    Always remember what BigA stated:
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Webmasters are notorious for re-organizing their sites (this is true for Companies, State Governments and the Federal Government) and breaking the links that people save for accessing a page at a later time.  This is a truth of using the internet that everyone needs to learn and accept.

Hint - Google is your friend (and most State websites have search functions).

As what happens from time to time government links get changed.  However you should be able to find the Ohio AG through a simple web search.  Their site should then provide you with the information on how to file a complaint.

Number texted saying it had a package for me. Upon calling the 888 number got told it was for a member of my family. After 5 minutes speaking with a human, they admitted the tactic was phishing and that they were a scam, they hung up after I confronted them about their admission.
